The Eagles where a brilliant motor, just a shame about the rot box Leyland built around it. When I first started driving in 81, my boss gave me nearly new one. Within two years he had to fit new doors because they’d rotted out.
Everything of that era rusted like buggery, apart from ERF of course in GRP. But even they had steel subframes

I did work for bloke here in Lowestoft by the name of Jock Stoddart, he had two of the first Ford Transcontinentals in Suffolk. He lost one on the Free Enterprise, when it went over.
I got to drive the other with a 320 Cummins that was a nice truck, but another rot box. But he had your dream pony an ERF day cab, with 180 Gardener, a six speed Eaton box and a two speed rear axle.

I thought the ERF cab panels were ABS, not GRP?
ABS . . . ?

The last ERF cabs were made with "Sheet Moulding Composite/Compound" (SMC), which I understand was still basically GRP . . . but, instead of a "gun" chopping and spraying the glass-fibre into a mould, a (huge) sheet of the stuff would be pulled between a male and female press . . . much the same as you would stamp-out metal pressings.

EDIT: I didn't see the process. The huge sheet of the stuff, might have been pulled over the (conventional) female part of the mould, and then pressed into shape by hand?!

Gardner too slow. Mine (ERF) has a 325 L10 Cummins. Still not a flying machine but double rhat of a 6LXB.

Could be . That said it definitely has fibre of some sort in it ( said a bloke who once had a bit of an oops with an ERF....)
RTC(V) has got it right - SMC.

Your mate must have had a big oopsie, it would usually bounce back from the smaller ones!

Twas me that had a bit of a truck cab open hangar door moment. There may have been a bit of bounce but mostly chop in half.

Puzzled by something I saw today. Two loaders in convoy each lugging a brand new mercedes truck all in grey which looked like a military version , like a American 6x6 or deuce etc.
Never seen anything like them and I cant uunderstand why they would be in the cotswolds . See the odd Usaf pickup around but that's it and they wouldn't use them anyway.

Any ideas ?

When you say "reminisce" do you really mean scare the sh*ts out of yourself at 50 as you get the Bedford equivalent of a tank slapper due to uncontrollable front wheel shimmy?
A mate had that in a Bristol coach/bus. It was as you described at about 55 mph, but smoothed out nudging 60.
He took the tyres off, turned em & refitted them, job jobbed.

Not seen one in the flesh before

As far as I know they are so expensive that commercial buyers haven't really gone for them

That's it . Very strange two brand spanking new .
Early 1970s, whilst I was working at Fodens.

I was sat in the outer office of David Foden, talking to his secretary, when he enters . . . on his way to his own office.

I say “Mr David, did you see the two competitor’s dump-trucks of the (Sandbach) Market Place car-park, last night ?”

He asks “No! . . . Could you see/tell who was the customer (Where they painted/liveried) ?”

I wanted to say “No, they were all bright and shiny new” . . . .

But, what came out, had a somewhat more “nautical” flavour/tone !! :( .
