Tributes to Falklands War hero who captained ferry Norland

This may be of interest to the passengers of the Norland during the summer cruise of '82.

The man who guided a North Sea passenger ferry through repeated Argentinian air attacks during the Falklands war has died.

Well-respected Captain Don Ellerby was at the helm of the Norland during the 1982 conflict.

He was given a CBE in 1983 for his leadership and courage.

The ferry was requisitioned by the Ministry of Defence to take soldiers from 2nd Battalion, The Parachute Regiment (2 PARA) to the islands.

Captain Ellerby, of Elloughton, died last Friday after a short illness. He was aged 80.

His death came just a few months after the Norland was taken to a ship break

That is quite correct but read the rest to understand the OP's point.

RIP.

Interesting to reflect on the fact that as a civilian ship's captain he took 2 PARA into a very dangerous area in his ferry without, seemingly, a gripe. I wonder what he would have made of the Navy individual not wanting to go to Afghanistan.
