I'm looking to get away on a last minute holiday.

I hear Pattaya has enough to interest the 'Single Traveller'

Any advice on low cost, nearish to the beach, guest houses or hostels? I hear airport transfers from BKK can be a bitch to, in terms of getting ripped off.

I'm looking at going for about 10-11 days (have the leave booked), but I have some Unit things I might need to attend so its 50/50 at the moment. And advice or other tips would be appreciated.
  2. In Pattaya anything goes  You can get anything from £2 per night student style to £50+ per night own apartment with maid service. I stayed here - quality but pricey. Next to the resort is an Engilsh pub that serves a real English breakfast all day (rare in Thailand) - They're both a bit south of Pattaya but only costs a couple of quid in a taxi - ask for John at the whispering Ccok, he'll serve you the best food and when you're done he'll arrange a free taxi back to your hotel!

P.S. The prices double if there is an American warship parked in Pattaya bay
Also get a flight from Bangkok it's only about £25 quid.

I live here, so here is my tuppence worth

Stacks of beer bars in the street where the Flipper Hotels are, rates are about 25 quid a night.
    Flipper Group
There are stacks of other places to stay but I've had good reports from this place. Travelbag might be able to get you better rates.

Once you've had a few in the beer bars, head to Walking Street! Places I'd recomend:
Whats Up, Misty's, Angelwitch all in Soi 15 off Walking Street. Diamond and Casino in Soi Diamond, (Casino is an early hours boozer when you really want a skinfull!) On the main drag that is Walking Street, Sisterz, Happy a Go Go ( a Pattaya institution, must visit), Living Dolls 2 and Peppermint. Another must is a "Soapy", Sabailand is a good one for that.

Regarding transport from airport, there are AOT Taxis that are airport run, but do come in at about 2200 baht (45 quid), expensive but they have decent cars and aren't scammers. Failing that ignore all the touts on the arrivals hall level and head for the official meter taxis, should cost about 1200 baht, the driver should have an official tariff sheet but you might have to haggle.

I'll be off to work around the 10th Jan, pm me if you're here before that and want a booze up!

    Enjoy your stay

  4. Pattaya and Phuket are not the same place. One is on the East Coast of the Gulf of Thailand the other is about 600km south on the Adaman Sea!
  5. Sorry, I meant to say Pattaya was near Bangkok.
both posts edited for drink :D
  6. Pattaya  Happy memories of a mis spent youth 8) now its just wall to wall hotels ,aids, girly bars and russian Mafia and polluted beaches, but its heaven for the single man, will try and attach a few piccies of how it was when it was first discovered by the Royal engineers from OP crown, long before the yanks from Utapao and Nakorn Ratshima :p the bar even flew the CRE flag, we bypass pattaya on our way south for the winter, Recomend Cha Am or Huahin , no paedophiles and low rate of crime, Try Thai purai city hotel great place good staff central, plenty of golfcourses in the area too , just tell them Nidnoi sent you

  7. exchange rate is a bit crap now when i first went it was 70baht to the pound now its around 45baht
  8. As had been said both Flipper House and Flipper lodge are very good.

    Clean,modern,very friendly and reasonably priced.

Oh and get yourself to a go-go bar called classroom, its a bit of a mecca for the discerning squaddie on tour.

Cheers for the advice everyone. Due to a last minute change in circumstances, I am going to Phuket this evening (going in blind to that too), but if all goes well, I will look at Pattaya for a bit of 'singley action before the peak season finishes in May.

Right, I'm off to Patt's in 3 weeks. Had such an 'interesting' time in Phuket, I decided I had to try the 'seediest place in the World' (description from a former Wedgie mate. Took the advice above, booked Flipper House, then 3 days in the Majestic Suites in BKK at the end of the trip. Getting a heads up on the 'Soi 6 form' and the general craic on a 'specialist' forum. Thanks for all the advice peeps.

Fcuk me, that place surprised me even though I was told in sordid detail what goes on. Nothing can prepare you for the hordes of Soi 6 or the veritibable bodily assaults/grabs on your person as you try to walk past beer bars...

What a trip though. Fcuking outstanding. Booked my return ticket for July. I'm hooked on that country - 3 trips in 7 months...Jesus, I hope I don't go native and fcuk my life up on Yabba or something. I already put in the application for a career break, but that was rejected. Hey ho.

Yeah, tell me about it. Based on what I was getting up to, I was going through + 100 squid a day, give or take, not factoring in hotels or flights. It's not something I could maintain if I was out there, thats for sure.

Spent the dough on going round loads of massage parlours - love the old Thai oil massage, did a soapy or two, sometimes went for a short time, bought too many ladydrinks, went to the odd gogo, had a bird for for long time, and then there was the boozing and eating. Oh, and had to munch the pills - did wonders for countering the booze.
