Training with Kettle Bells

Interested to hear from anyone (and for those that don't know, these are kettle shaped dumbell things with a handle) who has tried a session with these. Did one today with 2x 16kg and bl00dy nearly did my back in.

The technique being taught in the gym seems to be to fling the bells round with lots of jerky movements at speed. Is there an established technique because I'm sure this wasn't it.
I tried them once.. I didnt have proper instruction and basicly had no idea how to use them. I didnt like them at all. Felt very awkward and clumsy not to mention I was sure I was going to rip a muscle or something any second.

I havnt tried since.
