Top Gun movie - 30th Anniversary

As a young lad around Desert Storm always wondered why F3 crews never got any action as In air to air kills?

cheers
The RoE was written by the USAF to cater for the most capable Offensive Counter Air (OCA) fighter available: USAF F-15Cs. These took the vast majority of the overland OCA and package sweeps which is where nearly all Iraqi fighter opposition was encountered.

As a result, F-15Es, F-16s and FA-18s were primarily used for strike, SEAD and CAS and F-14s and Tornado F3s were held further back for defensive Counter Air (DCA). However, a pair of FA-18s killed 2 x Fishbeds during a strike mission and a F-14 killed an Mi-8 later in the conflict.

The nearest RAF F3s got was when they were committed onto a pair of Iraqi Mirage F1s flying an ASuW sortie in the Northern Gulf. They were on the point of engaging with Skyflash when they were hauled off (for political reasons) to allow a pair of Saudi F-15Cs to engage. The RAF crews then had to watch with some considerable frustration as the Saudi pilots screwed up the geometry, couldn't engage BVR and had to convert into an AIM-9L shot.

For similar reasons, F-15Cs were also allocated the primary OCA tasks during ALLIED FORCE.

That's what going out with a sailor does for a girl...

ISTR that one of the Saudi F-15s was reported to have screwed up the interception geometry so greatly that he wasn’t in the right piece of sky (for want of a better phrase) to be able to use his AIM-9. The other rumour was that as far as he was concerned, BVR was fine, but the thought of getting into a close in WVR fight was frankly unappealing so he left...

I like lesbians! Lesbians are female therefore they are good!

Talking of real dogfights, have I posted this YouTube clip about the Sea Harrier versus Skyhawk fight on 8 June 82?

I wonder if any footage exists of air to air combat between 21 May (D Day) and 24 May?

Would Top Gun have included a reference to MiGs being armed with Exocet if it was not for the Falklands?

They were deployed in defensive patrolling rather than offensive counter-air. I remember hearing that a pair received vector from a Sentry but the interception wasn't executed.

I was thinking that too but unlikely any Mig back then could be armed with the French made ASM....

Why does at one point the plot mentions the mythical high altitude high Mach 3 a/c that was rumoured to have replaced the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird 3 decades ago. I was surprised the Pentagon did not frown on this part of the movie plot considering they provided all the resources including their Super Hornet community et al for this. Even the Lockheed Martin SR-72 that was talked about for ages, officially (2013) from them suddenly came to a grinding halt when they publicly announced there was no such a/c in development last year or year. Even though there were rumours and sightings of subscale unmanned demonstrator (being escorted by one of. Edwards T-38 Talons )lurking around airspace between Palmdale and Edwards.

.The Pentagon were very keen to provide a/c, bases etc and support for Independence Day on the basis the script omitted Area 51/ Groom Lake. As it happened, the writers said sorry they would not change the script so the Pentagon also said sorry they could not help.

Project UFO tv series in the 1970s covering the work of Project Blue Book had heaps of usaf help with them providing T-38 Talon for opening sequences of Season 2, plus actors inside T-33, Bell UH-1N, C-130A etc.

Any thoughts please ?

Maybe I'm just cynical since the F/A-18 was the master-of-none damp squib that replaced my childhood F-14s and A-7s, but I just can't excite myself about a movie featuring them.

It's like Italian Job 2 shot using Vauxhall Corsas.
