  1. The New England Journal of Medicine is about to publish a study that will warn of an alarming increase in reports of cosmetic breast implants going wrong. Women have frequently suffered from post operative issues relating to breast enhancement or reduction. However, the current rise in problems is being attributed by recent research, not to surgical techniques or malpractice, but to Global Climate Change.

Dramatic, extreme and unforeseen changes in temperatures and humidity are being identified as the cause of sudden changes in the viscosity of implant materials causing rapid and uncontrollable inflation and deflation of breasts. It appears especially prevalent in silicon gel implants which were commonly used until 1992 when they were banned by the FDA but which have since been allowed back on to the market. Saline implants which are favoured by surgeons today, are less prone to what is becoming known as the BRIAD Syndrome, (Breast Rapid Inflation And Deflation). Aside from cosmetic considerations, the syndrome is creating growing concern amongst doctors given the number of “gel bleeds,” caused by ruptured gel membranes causing local tissue damage and typically, immune dysfunction.
