Those In Peril Upon The Sea

Pah, 'tis bit a bit of roughers! Here, have some compo...

Eighteen hours...?? Pah!!! I'm sure I'm not the only sea-going type on here who's regularly spent several days - and even weeks - at a time waiting on weather or trying to make headway through it, doing this sort of thing for the duration:-

(You don't count, being one of those sneaky types that cruised around in blissful stability below all the bouncy-bouncy muck on the top!)

Heh heh heh! Believe it or not, REAL roughers can still be felt at 5 to 700ft. We damaged a periscope once when it was rough, remember, we are basically a tube, and roll like a barsteward - no fun at all. All the skimmers had to shelter, we just went deep.

No’but a gentle breeze. Now when I worra lad …

This will be of interest to a few salty-old dogs on Arrse.
Navigating vast swathes of ocean, the old way
(as a kid I spent a blissful few years in these islands, sailing the smaller canoes seen here

I had been thinking of the merits of a new thread. Ancient and modern boat design, building, sailing and related technologies. It doesn't quite fit the boat ownership thread and the scope could be quite wide, including topics as diverse as Polynesian migration, vessel safety and sustainability.

I first crossed the bay of Biscay in a 23 footer in the late 1970s. A 3 day rollercoaster ride. We were lucky to have enough sea room to ride it out. Weather forecasts for the area came with a big Gallic shrug in those days.

Good idea - it is such a massive and diverse subject.
And the backbone of what built the British Empire, of course.

Modern looking outrigger. The crab claw lateen sail has attracted interest amongst German engineers and aerodynamicists. For it’s size it turns out to be super efficient due to the turbulence it creates.

You can add Tim Severins stuff to that video. Is any of Thor Heyerdals stuff on you tube?
