The Trump Presidency...

Big tech is against him, the deep state is against him, media is against him,

He must be so lonely. He needs to see a friend, someone who will make him smile.

Perhaps other than a foreign autocrat.

.....
Are private tech firms now the arbiters of "truth" for the world now?

For an actual discussion of thst, I suggest we switch to the 'social media is toxic' thread.

Around here it will just be handbaggery.

But there is a fascinsting commentary for starters here in social media and the Philippines

Where social media is fine, until you question Rodrigo Duterte for example.

Can I just check, who is doing the locking up?

Any chance it is professional law enforcement and subsequent court hearings; or is it some Boogaloo's and a 4WD?

Regardless of the Schadenfreude in Trump's displeasure, Twitter has set a dangerous precedence for censorship against a US news outlet.

Who's next?
Critical stories of Biden written by Bernie Bro's?
Critical stories of Biden written by pro Clinton groups (sorry, they don't seem to have a cool group name)?

Are we even allowed to criticize Biden without being branded a Trumpeteer, Nazi, racist?

We now have three stories.
1. Biden emails - let the FBI investigate and be peer reviewed.
2. Political censorship by big tech
3. A drug addict son (which is not really a story and is gutter press at its worst).

Instead of being a platform for free speech (to an extent within the T&C's) Twitter is now seen as another biased political platform like Fox News. This will be very damaging for the brand.

It certainly strengthens the case for nationalising Twitter and to an extent Facebook.

See my posts passim ad nauseam on the topic of social media and the growing splinternet!

I don't think a human has ever, even at humanity's lowest ebb, wanted to pay to see a g-string peeled from betwixt those pasty buttocks.

You won’t see this emphasized by the Main Stream Media (MSM). In fact, you won’t see Biden questioned about this at his press conferences. Up until now, we’ve seen this stuff ignored, and blatantly censored, or excused by the MSM.

I wonder if there's any mention of how much money the media has taken from China to influence the election. That would be embarrassing. As well as treasonous.

According to G-TV, the Hunter Biden pedo videos are extremely disturbing and obscene:

Hungary strikes back after Biden’s outrageous remarks.

Biden may not be playing with a ‘full deck’.

- Joe Biden triggered a huge diplomatic row with NATO members Hungary and Poland after appearing to lump them in with Belarus as “totalitarian regimes”, with the Hungarian government demanding answers on his family’s alleged corruption in Ukraine.

“We may still remember the kind of Central European policy the Democrats pursued for eight years; we may still recall the continuous lecturing, accusations and attacks,” railed Hungary’s foreign minister, Péter Szijjártó, denouncing Biden’s comments as having “nothing to do with reality”.

The foreign minister went on the note that Biden seemed “particularly busy” when it came to foreign policy under the Obama administration, suggesting that for a time, “and I exaggerate a bit, Biden spent more of his time outside D.C. in Ukraine than in rural America.”

“This was the time when his son happened to be a chief executive at a key Ukrainian energy company; this was also the time when there were deals in the Ukrainian energy sector that were suspected of being corrupt,” the Hungarian continued.

“It would be best if Joe Biden could answer some of those old questions that have been out there for a while, before attacking Central Europe,” he said, adding: “It would be great if Joe Biden could tell us why he put pressure on the Ukrainian government to fire its chief prosecutor, and how all of this related to the investigation into his son’s Ukrainian energy deals grinding to a halt.”

* Of course, Merkel and the Eurocrats in Brussels just adore Uncle Joe.

If your 25 and follow twitter, the Visegrad countries are enemies of progress....

The discussion will continue to go around and around and around until the US government actually address the issue instead of ducking the issue.
Could you imagine if the news was all FOX and social media was ran by Steve Bannon and only one serious channel existed, that gave out a more progressive news ? it would be defined as: 'we're almost living in a fascist state'.

The young people are the primary market and have always been communitarian and a bit socialist and the media reflect that, as the only way and why it can be so jarring.. I have however noticed a little bit of a change in young people, who are far more cynical and expect to be lied too, by its own side and that disconnect, is the sort of thing which will benefit social conservatives going forward.

While there certainly seem to be concerns with corruption in both the Czech Republic and Slovakia, they're nowhere near as concerning as developments in the other two members:

'After taking power in 2010 elections, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s Alliance of Young Democrats–Hungarian Civic Union (Fidesz) party pushed through constitutional and legal changes that have allowed it to consolidate control over the country’s independent institutions. More recently, the Fidesz-led government has moved to institute policies that hamper the operations of opposition groups, journalists, universities, and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) whose perspectives it finds unfavorable.

'Poland’s democratic institutions took root at the start of its transition from communist rule in 1989. Rapid economic growth and other societal changes have benefited some segments of the population more than others, contributing to a deep divide between liberal, pro-European parties and those purporting to defend national interests and “traditional” Polish Catholic values. Since taking power in late 2015, the populist, socially conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party has enacted numerous measures that increase political influence over state institutions and threaten to reverse Poland’s democratic progress.'

Its an irony of a sort what your arguing. Because parties who are not pro-European and liberal, will be immediately deemed as Bigots/Racists and receive plenty of harassment and have their operations targeted and hampered.

In someway, Trump wraps himself in the american flag and is a bigot and here lies the kink in your logic and how far the ideas of Freedom are only acceptable where they're are linked to 'values' defined by others aound progressive authoritarian ideals.

Yeah, right.

Freedom House is a U.S.-based,[4] U.S. government-funded[5] non-profit non-governmental organization (NGO) that conducts research and advocacy on democracy, political freedom, and human rights.[6] Freedom House was founded in October 1941, and Wendell Willkie and Eleanor Roosevelt served as its first honorary chairpersons.

Below are the organizations and entities who funded Freedom House in 2016:[5]

  • Government of the United States – $24,813,164 (85.5%)
  • International public agencies – 2,266,949 (7.8%)
  • Corporations and foundations – 1,113,262 (3.8%)
  • Individual contributions – 1,113,262 (2.8%)
In its 2017 and 2018 financial statements, Freedom House once again disclosed that it "was substantially funded by grants from the U.S. Government." In 2017, the organization received $29,502,776, 90% of its total revenue that year, from the US government.[35] In 2018, the US government gave Freedom House $35,206,355, or 88% of its annual revenue.[36]

A possible future

I sincerely recommend reading

I am not a Russian SME, but their societal and government response to the net is very interesting.

Even non-authoritarian countries are warming to the 'sovereign internet' (partially due to understandable feads of US 'home turf advantage', ie the Americans have an easier time spying on people due to infrastructure being reliant upon them).

Given I think Trump's IQ and attention span isn't up to dealing with a Bugs Bunny cartoon, think we've going to have to wait until some grown-ups arrive to deal wtih this one.

Comrade Corbyn was interested in nationalising the Internet. I wonder why?

First thing Comrade Putin did when he came to power was shut-down or take over all the private media in Russia, just when the locals were getting told truths about Russian history, the systemic corruption of the state and Yeltsin's mess bill. Seems its the first thing to do in the Ladybird book of Dictators

What does Freedom House, say about the oppression of the Orange man Bad ?
Oh yes, 86/100 and a couple of digs about Trump, not been welcoming enough about migrants and his threat to not recognise a Biden victory under certain question marks over postal voting.
