in one unit we had drums, penny whistles and a diggeridoo

I know the feeling except that the day(s) I missed was the one with the carrot.

Depends on what you're doing. Best way to motivate someone over an assault course is a piece of 2 by 4 and a lot of volume (not that you can do that these days).

However, at 2 am in the morning when on shift and working alone on a report on something boring but important the only thing that makes you go the extra mile to make sure it's the best piece of work possible is you.

Agreed but do you not think that Professionalism, Loyalty and "Feeling valued" play a significant part???

The latter two being somethings that seem to to have diminished in importance in today's Armed Forces.
