Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Can any one help me. I am trying to do some research into how the sounding of the retreat came about. where was the first time it was herd, what battle it was in and who sounded it Any other information that any one knows about the sounding of the retreat would be much appreciated.
  2. Perhaps an Italian forum would be more forthcoming about its origin!
  3. Do you mean the tradtition of Beating Retreat or do you mean the bugle noise followed by screams etc?
  4. the tradtition of Beating Retreat please
  5. British Army origin of Sounding/Beating the Retreat was when it was used in the 16th Century to signify that the Soldiers were 'retreating' to bed... in the link I put above :)
  6. thank you that will do for me
