Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. My first taste of Northern Ireland. Equipped with Ferret scout cars, Saladin armoured cars, and the glorious Saracen APC. We covered 53% of the border between NI and the republic. Based at Omagh we covered most of West Tyrone and the whole of Co Fermanagh. So different to my second tour (4 months in urban Londonderry). That 18 month tour was an experience I would not have missed for anything.

  2. My old Sqn,11H, was resident at Castle Archdale, before my time, but most of the lads seem to have enjoyed it,plenty of drinks out of camp and friendly girls.Different times.

Troop of two sections. Every evening one was on patrol (VCPs), the other was on the piss ... I mean standby. Whilst doing the Belcoo area, one evening as troop nig I was informed that tonight we'd be doing VCH.
    "You mean VCPs?"
"No VCH: we are going to Visit ColesHill and get drunk with the UDR."
    "Fairy nuff."

There was also an RAC presence pre-Op Banner. 15/19H did at least one post-war-pre-Banner tour.

  6. I was in Omagh in '79 and I could have sworn that 5th 'Skins were there? Or maybe they were in St Angelo?

    My head hurts

  7. The skins were in Fermanagh in 1981, they were never a resident unit at Lisanelly Barracks Omagh. They were in Osnabruck in 1979.

QDG were also at Omagh from 1964-66, so it's likely that some senior people did Omagh twice, It must have been an eye opener to go there in 1980 after experiencing the place in 1964/5/6.
