The Q-ANON conspiracy - a Black Propaganda victory ?

One of the largely unsung successes of Britain in WWII was the work of a small department in the Ministry of Propaganda ( later the Central Office of Information )

For several years, this tiny group was engaged in subverting the Reich from WITHIN.

Broadcasting in colloquial German they spent their time reducing Nazi morale and sowing FUD. Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt.

One of their key platforms for this was a fake radio station which pretended to be a reliable source for Germans sick of hearing Goebbels' lies and desperate for a news source that reflected their own 'lived reality'

The Brits provided it.

In the United Kingdom, the Political Warfare Executive operated a number of black propaganda radio stations. Gustav Siegfried Eins (GS1) was one of the first such stations—purporting to be a clandestine German station. The speaker, "Der Chef", purported to be a Nazi extremist, accusing Adolf Hitler and his henchmen of going soft. The station focused on alleged corruption and sexual improprieties of Nazi Party members.

Another example was the British radio station Soldatensender Calais, which purported to be a radio station for the Wehrmacht. Under the direction of Sefton Delmer, a British journalist who spoke perfect Berliner German, Soldatensender Calais and its associated shortwave station, Kurzwellensender Atlantik [de], broadcast music, up-to-date sports scores, speeches of Adolf Hitler for "cover" and subtle propaganda.

Radio Deutschland was another radio station employed by the British during the war aimed and designed to undermine German morale and create tensions that would ultimately disrupt the German war effort. The station was broadcast on a frequency close on the radio dial to an actual German station. During the war most Germans actually believed that this station was in fact a German radio station and it even gained the recognition of Germany's propaganda chief Joseph Goebbels.[7]

There were British black propaganda radio stations in most of the languages of occupied Europe as well as German and Italian.[8] Most of these were based in the area around Bletchley Park and Woburn Abbey in Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire respectively.

Another possible example was a rumour that there had been a German attempt to land on British shores at Shingle Street, but it had been repulsed with large German casualties. This was reported in the American press, and in William L. Shirer's Berlin Diary but was officially denied. British papers, declassified in 1993, have suggested this was a successful example of British black propaganda to bolster morale in the UK, USA and occupied Europe.

A highly placed 'secret source' deep within the US Government starts drip-feeding bizarre but apparently credible stories into the American public consciousness.

The main thrust is to sow distrust of previously well-regarded news sources.
Sunday Times article : August 23 2020 : It started with pizza. But QAnon is a serious threat

It has belatedly occurred to me that the great Q-ANON con trick might quite possibly be one of the most successful 'Black Propaganda' operations ever perpetrated by a wily and subtle adversary in the history of Psy-Ops.....

There may be current practitioners here who can recognise the known 'combat indicators' of a psy-op in full flow....just thinking out loud.....

Tin-foil hat fetched, is that my taxi?

Not beyond the realms of possibility, but the question would have to be why.

I don't think there is any obvious benefit to the US government, but another country or group who wants to destabilise the us maybe.

I can think of at least two countries that have the will, the desire and the means to do exactly that Crow.

Natürlich, it may be that my thirty years of anti-Soviet conditioning have turned me into just another crusty old Cold War warrior,
' past his sell-by date and unwilling to abandon old certainties for the new reality.'

A bit more on what De Gaulle dubbed ' La Bataille des Ondes ' as long ago as 1940.

Cold War black propaganda of the Soviet Union[edit]

Prior to, and during the Cold War, the Soviet Union used disinformation on multiple occasions. It also employed the technique during the Iranian hostage crisis that took place from 1979 until 1981.

For strictly political purposes, and to show support for the hostages, Soviet diplomats at the United Nations vocally criticized the taking of the hostages.

At this same time, Soviet "black" radio stations within Iran called the National Voice of Iran openly broadcast strong support for the hostage-takers in an effort to increase anti-American sentiment inside Iran.[5] This was a clear use of black propaganda to make anti-American broadcasts appear as if they were originating from Iranian sources.

Throughout the Cold War, the Soviet Union effectively used the KGB's Service A of the First Chief Directorate in order to conduct its covert, or "black", "active measures".[12]

It was Service A that was responsible for clandestine campaigns that were targeted at foreign governments, public populations, as well as to influence individuals and specific groups that were hostile towards the Soviet government and its policies. The majority of their operations was actually conducted by other elements and directorates of the KGB.[13] As a result, it was the First Chief Directorate that was ultimately responsible for the production of Soviet black propaganda operations.

By the 1980s, Service A consisted of nearly 120 officers whose responsibilities consisted of covert media placements, and controlled media to covertly introduce carefully manufactured information, disinformation, and slogans into the areas such as government, media, and religion of their targeted countries, namely the United States.

Because both the Soviet Union and the KGB's involvements were not acknowledged and intentionally disguised, these operations are therefore classified as a form of black propaganda.[12]

The activities of Service A greatly increased during the period of the 1980s through the early 1990s presumably as the Soviet government fought to maintain control during the declining period of the Cold War.

Bit more on the historic background here : How Soviet Active Measures Themes Were Spread

Finally, as the spectre of the disintegration of the Soviet political system began to emerge as an increasingly real possibility from 1990 onward, Soviet disinformation and active measures operations naturally took advantage of concerns in the West about the unpredictable effects that such a course of events might have in an effort to forestall this eventuality.

Soviet active measures themes became increasingly alarmist in tone, with predictions of supposedly apocalyptic events that would accompany the removal of Gorbachev or the disintegration of the Soviet Union reaching a crescendo just before both events occurred in December 1991.

It is just racist to say 'Putin' did it all' - Xi and the Iranian leadership has also been doing their bit. As Carl Jung said, the shadow goes all the way down to hell - standing in the way of the truth (which is represented in theological and psychological discussions as light) really is the path to hell.

Bit of an old slide, but still true:

Any or all US three-letter agencies would quite happily destabilise the US Government and people, it doesn't have to be external. In all living memory the US has been more afraid of itself and it's people than it ever has been of external foes. Leader of the free? don't make me laugh, if Americans were as 'free' as the freedom they wish to impose on the rest of the world, they'd all be in chains.

Thanks @Yokel - appreciated. Public source info I'm sure.

Seems to me the main thrust of the Q-ANON activity (whatever its origin and agenda) fits well with the objectives in the top right hand corner of that slide: Hecklers

What is the aim?

  • To discredit Democracy, Public and Government figures ? Tick
  • Sow Mistrust ? Amply demonstrated. Tick
  • Advance Narratives ? Tick

Who stands to benefit ?

Any adversary who wants to see US leadership effectively castrated.

Edited to add: At a guess, a division of the SVR called APT 29 will be spending fat bonuses in 2021.

This qualifies as Quite Interesting : https://media.defense.gov/2020/Jul/...PT29_ADVISORY-QUAD-OFFICIAL-20200709-1810.PDF - though mostly of interest to IT folks.

and some 'non-MSM ' coverage : How the Russian hacking group Cozy Bear, suspected in the SolarWinds breach, plays the long game - CyberScoop

At last a respectable and reasonably logical conspiracy theory! Genuinely interesting. As long as we accept that those going along with the whole QAnon thing in the US are genuinely right-wing Americans, so not an entirely false flag enterprise even if the instigators are false flag.

What will be 'intriguing' is how many of the Q-ANON adherents on Arrse will flock to this thread to debunk the notion......

let us all remember Mao's dictum: ' “Let a Hundred Flowers Blossom, Let a Hundred Schools of Thought Contend.”

- promptly followed by a wave of arrests of those who took him at his word

So the Russians could be using front organisations to undermine the US political system, spreading their message through behind the scenes figures in the new modern forms of media, disseminating propaganda through fringe groups and indeed manipulating well known celebrities, all with the purpose of destroying the integrity of American democracy and the system of government while polluting the mainstream with weird and dangerous theories designed to sow division and conflict?

A frightening thought, but, er, isn't that exactly what the House Committee on Un-American Activities alleged they were doing in the 1950s? Aren't we sophisticated, modern, liberal types supposed to sneer derisively at such absurd "reds-under-the-bed" paranoia? George Clooney and the rest of Hollywood always assure us that no such conspiracy existed, it was all the deranged fantasy of right wing John Birch types.

It seems to me that if we can believe Vladimir Putin is capable of doing it today, isn't it just as likely that Joe Stalin was doing exactly the same thing back then.

"Hello, Senator Joe McCarthy? It's History here, I may owe you an apology".

Sefton Delmer published his book about the black propaganda campaign, and Soldatensender Calais almost 60 years ago - "Black Boomerang."

To be effective though, the disinformation has to be credible. That is, just a little inaccurate whereas Q-Anon peddles a deep state control and pedophilia. Were not talking about Belgium here.

Vladdy must be chuckling at viewing the Gong Show going on in the Excited States --- he couldn't have planned and executed it better! Better still it didn't cost him a single rouble!

Q-Anon can’t be all that clever. I doubt if anyone can pronounce their name correctly.

With a Village People look alike storming the White House, they're a bit more inventive than the usual cover story of visiting cathedrals at least

So Q is a conspiracy theory aimed at those poor old white nationalists, and thus getting themselves to expose themselves as nasty little neo-nazi fucktards.

Poor them.
