UK Trade : Deficit widened to £3.7bn in March



The UK’s deficit on trade in goods and services was £3.7 billion in March, compared with a deficit of £2.2 billion in February (originally published as a deficit of £2.1 billion).

The surplus on trade in services was £3.8 billion in March, compared with a surplus of £4.1 billion in February.

The deficit on trade in goods was £7.5 billion in March, compared with a deficit of £6.3 billion in February (originally published as a deficit of £6.2 billion). Exports rose by £0.2 billion and imports rose by £1.4 billion.

The deficit with EU countries widened to £3.4 billion in March, compared with a deficit of £2.9 billion in February. Exports rose by £0.1 billion and imports rose by £0.7 billion. There was a rise in imports of cars.

The deficit with non-EU countries widened to £4.1 billion in March, compared with a deficit of £3.4 billion in February. Exports rose by £0.1 billion and imports rose by £0.8 billion. There were rises in exports of oil and aircraft, and a fall in exports of chemicals. There was a rise in imports of intermediate goods.

Excluding oil and erratic items, the volume of exports fell by 1.8 per cent but the volume of imports rose by 3.5 per cent, compared with February.
