The Paras: Men of War - New ITV Series

Joe, Joe Crow, Crow...takes me back to training. But the over use of the word Joe is a bit annoying.
Good to see the joes still being called bell ends and similar names.
And yes depot did seem harder in my day!

Just caught up with this.

A few observations.

1) Those rifles look well used and by that I mean totally ******* trashed. Never seen silver barrels on an SA80 before (with the exception of the new chrome ceremonial jobs).

2) 5 mins to strip and reassemble an SA80?? Bitch please even most matelots can do it in less than that.

3) as someone has mentioned above, it might just be the editing, but did anyone else watch this and think “it really doesn’t look that hardcore?” I didn’t see anything particularly harder or worse than what I did in HAC recruits course. Our DS just had posher accents.

It’s meant to be the paras, I was expecting to see people spewing on CFTs, lads getting knocked about a bit by the DS, beds getting thrown out of windows, spittle flecked faces from screaming platoon Sgts etc.

I missed the last 10 minutes or so, but I guess the initial "personal admin" stuff/beastings/room inspections was glossed over, as the programme seemed to cut quickly to "week 5". No bad thing really - we've seen all that shite before and it doesn't really say much about the individual recruits.

These programmes are a little bit like the x factor nowadays, in that they seem to focus on half a dozen "hopefuls" and one can't help placing bets on who's going to come through.

FWIW, the South African lad I found supremely irritating and self-absorbed (what happened to him, I missed that bit?) Really felt for the black kid though, his attitude seemed to tick all the boxes and just seemed to go to pieces because of mental exhaustion.

As soap operas go, I'd give it 9/10 :D

Agreed on the soap opera. They must have edited the timeline a lot on this. For the black lad to be so incompetent on his weapons handling around the time they were apparently 7 weeks in or more and had such terrible field admin too seems hugely unlikely. If he was that shite he would, surely, have been binned weeks before.

Also he was in the pit next door to a bloke who’d already done 4 years previously in the Army.

You’d think that guy would’ve got a grip of him and taught him how to stick the bolt carrier in a rifle properly.

I guess the other guy was senior man and they twigged numbnuts as "challenged" early on and allocated his bedspace accordingly.

Commenting from an (almost) layperson's point of view - I wonder what the programme makers were hoping to portray?

"The Paras" surely indicates that they want to come across as something a bit special, and rightly so , but I saw nothing in last night's programme (unless I dozed off for a few seconds) that deviated from any other basic training.

I appreciate that the specialised stuff comes later, but it wasn't a promising portrayal.

The Saffer got out.
After a bit more singing.

At what time in training do they pass off the square, and stop calling out the time? IIRC, they went from week 1, day 1 to week 10 in less than half an hour. Never saw them get issued kit, get shouted at on the square, running routes, or gym, The Saffer had his leaving interview with the OC at week 10, but was still calling out the time.

Enjoyed watching it.
