Yeah - scary stuff. Don't think it'd happen these days: politicians are much more traceable and electorates are a lot more cluey. But the Nazis did a superb "smoke and mirrors" job on the Germans. After Versailles, they hated everyone involved in their defeat in WWI, and any prospect of getting even with the French, British and Americans was going to be seized upon without question. What the Nazis brought to the party, was style. Not substance. But the parades ... the uniforms ... the cars (Hitler had impeccable taste in staff cars), and the rhetoric, were a heady draught for a populace ready to embrace a liberator, a leader - der Fuhrer.
