i wandered in to the dropshorts forum out of friendly curiosity to see if they have a sense of humour and found that their top sticky is defending themselves in the old lanyard tale. brilliant!

Why would they put so much effort into it if it wasn't true?

No smoke without fire and all that.

good to know that dedicated years of baiting has seriously affected our dear friends, hopefully for life

But it's got to the stage now, where only Gunners believe it.

Interestingly, I first heard our version from my Granddad. And he was RHA!

ooooohh get her! I think she doth protest too much..

Whether you like it or not me old drop short buds, there is always a ring of truth where such tales of yore are concerned, and as has already been mentioned, you wouldn't all be fighting your corner so much if it was bo***cks now would you?
I'll keep my NINE flames and lovely BLUE lanyard in favour of only seven and a pistol pull through thankyou very much.

Do note that noone has disputed the fact it is a tale, just basking in the joy that fiction can have impact on reality. Chinny up Fella! We'll be starting on someone else next month. :p

never ever let the truth get in the way of a good story.

In the good old days when 25 were in Traz next door to 4th Field...we had great pleasure in reminding them about the lanyard yarn! Truth or fiction...who gives a crap? Just to see their faces was enough! Especially after we (Not me!) painted their lovely shiney display guns with yellow spots prior to the Op Flogger tour in 86! They were NOT happy!
Oh how we sniggered......alot!

Probably yet another myth. I was always told the nine mile snipers were not issued with clasp knives to prevent them from cutting the traces from the gun towing horses.

I would just like to add that I, as most RE's had a dislike for the RA, after all it is inbedded into us from day one. To compound the distain I shared Roberts Barracks with 4th in the old days of the Traz (1991). I couldn't understand all the BS and painting everything they saw, working boots that where bulled and a strict regime on the walking out dress as the RA ran the Guard Room.

Saying all that it was in 1996 when I had the honour of serving with a Light Gun Regiment of the RA for a few years. The blokes where no different from sappers, infact they reminded me of the Corps in every way. Let us not forget that in our history the RA and RE have always been rivals and this has continued with the longest sporting event in british military history, the glorious RE v RA rugby fixture. Let us also remember that it was the technical officers of the RE and RA that where trained together in the Royal Academy Woolwich whilst the scum and chippy officers where dragged up at the Sandhurst College.

There should be a healthy rivalry between our two great cap badges and long may it remain so, but remember that we should stand back to back when it comes to other Regiments with less pedigree shouting the odds
