    Can anyone with experience comment on this training program or advise a better program for strength and mass gains?

  2. 5 x 5 is a good start and you will get a good combination of mass and strength gains as long as you eat plenty.
     
  3. It doesn't really matter, so long as you find it heavy... all the lifters say that you should find your own way.

    I lift similar, grab a weight I can do 6 with and do 30. It goes kind of 6-4-2/3... and reps of one. But I made some good gains last month.
    5x5 sounds OK, but don't slack on the weight.
