'Apple has released official advice for iPhone 4 owners to overcome the problem of the device losing signal when held by the lower left corner.

Steve Jobs responded to a query about the problem from one owner by saying: "Just avoid holding it in that way."

The official advice is to "avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band".

Alternatively, said Apple, customers could buy a case to shield the antenna.

The problem is thought to be particularly acute for left-handed owners who naturally touch the phone in the sensitive area.'

hmm...

** awaits incoming from the Apple fanbois to tell us we're all wrong and the iPhone 4 is the greatest thing since the last greatest thing... **

I hear the RC priesthood also has a similar problem - perhaps Apple can supply a similar rubber wrap for them too?

I'm left handed and I would be getting one if I didn't have a 3G, which is a bit too recent to justify an upgrade.

It's not a massive drama to not cover the antenna with your hand.

The only thing that might put me off would be the ridiculous advertising with the 4.0 firmware, it will put adverts in paid for apps, and will use your GPS position to send you adverts relating to what shop you visit, which I imagine would be bloody annoying.

I use a macbook and ipod touch and love them both, I'm quite an apple geek. Unfortunately I think the iphone and ipad and not the best of devices out there and are really just ripping the punters off, before long they will have a name and reputation as bad as microsofts.

If the iPhone or any other Apple product is not for you, bla bla bla
Blimey, not again? Are you working for apple? Every time someone has the audacity to suggest that not every product is 100% perfect you crawl out of the woodwork with the old 'if you don't like it the product its not for you - shut up' crap!

You obviously don't favour constructive criticism

where did I say ' "This is crap, I'm not going to buy it" '?

the BBC think it's newsworthy. The Register think it's newsworthy. if Nokia had released a phone that basically stops working when you actually try and use it as a phone, I'd have been as likely to comment on that, this being the IT centric forum.

however, despite this being in my (and a lot of other peoples) view a fairly basic design flaw in what is still supposed to be primarily a phone, you have Apple trying to tell you that no, it's not a design flaw at all, and we definitely havent got it wrong, in spite of seeming either releasing a product that either a. had no kind of meaningful QA testing or b. they knew was deeply flawed in operation.

I'm **still** waiting for someone to explain to me how magical the iPad actually is - unless Apple are referring to it's ability to suddenly make a huge dent in your wallet in return for not very much at all.

'It's good not to be on the wrong side of "them and us".'

then you're as much a sheep as the Apple haters you decry.

and as for Windows being an 'unmitigated disaster'? er, yeah, ok. how many corporate networks run Mac OS again? and if Windows is so bad, why have Macs slowly evolved into hardware that are capable of running it? if Mac OS was so inherently superior, what would be the point?

I wont be going back to windows as much as it annoys me how apple are treating their customers at the moment. For instance look at the apple website for the uk and the states and compare the iphone prices, can anyone tell me the reason between the massive difference in price? its surely not the exchange rate.

It's not always as simple as them just charging more (although it sometimes is), different countries have different costs and taxation.

If you can buy the phone in the US, pay delivery and customs charges to the UK and still have it cheaper than buying in this country, it's probably a good indicator that you're being ripped off.

Don't forget that the network and finance companies may also take a bigger cut in the UK.
