A WW1 Myth, Hitler saw the VC painting of Pte Tandy and put the story around that Pte Tandy was the English Tommy who had the opportunity to kill him, (Hitler). At the date when Tandy was on the same point of the front; Hitler was on sick leave after being wounded. It has been proved they never met; or even saw each other.

  2. While it does seem "unlikely", if it is true it's hell of a story. As the article states, there is some discrepancy as to whether Hitler's unit were there at the time, but still.....

Shame the medals were donated to the wrong museum mind you.

  3. agreed.....Pte Henry Tandey VC The Duke of Wellington's Regiment....not the bloody frankies

  4. Serving with the Dukes but most definitely a Howard!! Anyway, we are all one regiment now....

The original of the painting is in the Inf Offrs Mess in Catterick if anyone is interested.

  5. once a duke always a duke

  6. Are you sure - He is listed as a member of a Lewis Gun team, 5th Bn, Duke of Wellington's (West Riding) Regt.

There is a mention of the Hitler thing, but not any link to being a Howard.

  7. when he was awarded the VC he was a Duke...its states it on the VC winners list on wikipedia..also in the VC hall in the Union Jack club, in my mess in 3YORKS (Duke of Wellington's), in the regimental museum and in every history book. if the Green Howards XIX didn't have Tandey as one of theirs then they would only have 18 VCs not 19 to match the XIX. he also when injured and demobbed reinlisted as a Frankie...hence they claim his VC

  8. Is that not some kind of medal 'walting' then?

  9. absolutely!!
