Yep, we left all our Sherman Fireflies in a couple of scrapyards in Belgium on the way home from the war in 1945.

Two Army Officers were detailed to oversee their destruction.

A few months later, its demob time so they head home. No one turns up to replace them.

Aha says Jaques! I have hundred of top tanks!

Enter Belgian armee stage left who fill their boots, and he sells off the remainder to people like Argentina.

Americans not best pleased

I'd like to think the Firefly was highly recommended by some of the German military advisors/fugitive war criminals that emigrated to Argentina after 1945, like in the McDonnel-Douglas survey.

Instead of scrapping scimitar why don't they keep a squadrons worth down there in storage? There be plenty of spare parts ect left.
At last years DVD there was a very shiny one on display - I think they are trying to raise a few quid by selling them off.

I did ask about the price before you ask - the salesman was very cagey (I’ve always wanted one since my action-man version).

Possibly, but not as I recall. I read it elsewhere as a review in an American publication of just how useful CVR(T) was/is. The article was criticising the use of the Bradley as a scout vehicle when there was a small, quiet, nimble, useful... you get the drift.

30 years later we have AJAX.
 
I think the truth is they didn't think we would come down and fight them for it. The Americans were giving them intelligence as well as some of the gucci kit we subsequently nicked off them!
Exactly what gucci kit would that be?

True .
They were acquired from Belgian scrap yards stroke arms dealers in the late 40's .
It says on one of their forums ( foro military ISTR ) that when they unloaded the tanks in Argentina there were still the odd personal belongings of British crews found on board
 
Very informative, I remember reading somewhere, however, that the issue of the Argentines being conscripts has often been overblown especially in the media, as in "poor wee untrained teenage Argie conscripts being made to fight professional British troops".

In fact the Argentinian military only sent men at the end of their two years' service and recalled recently discharged conscripts, in other words men in their early twenties who had done at least two years' training and who were it must be remembered led by professional NCOs and officers. The two armies were, therefore, effectively of exactly the same standard, or at least should have been if they had been properly looked after.

(Their boots were better too ;-) )
The conscripts sent were a mix of recent intakes and recalled one year , or 18 month service men ( the army only did 1 years service , the navy & marines 18 months )
The level of professionalism in the permanent cadre varied enormously .
A lot of the platoon commanders went straight from the Military College ( their Sandhurst ) to the trenches , the course having been cut short .That said , it was a 3 year course .

The old boy who used play the organ in church told me that in 1945 he belonged to the organization tasked with getting rid of lend lease equipment .
Some of it was disposed of correctly .
Someone would come and inspect the Shermans , and they had to be exactly as when the Americans had handed them over , with tool kits , spare road wheels , radios , guns and bombed up .They were then put on LST's and dumped out in the North Sea .
As @PhotEx says though , there was literally tons of this stuff , everyone was fed up and wanted to get demobbed and this was the birth , or re birth of Belgian arms dealing , as the stuff was mostly unguarded . Other threads on here have discussed the thousands of rifles , machine guns and SMG's that also found their way into warehouses , got re conditioned and sold on .

TV historian Dan Snow just did a dive in a disused quarry on Alderney. Apparently chock full of Boxhead kit dumped during the clear up in 45/46.

Written off Charge: FoC
Retained: 10 cents on the $ (was to full price, the Americans were happy to take scrap value)

So, after VE Day, a rush to write vast mountains of stuff off, that turned into an avalanche after VJ Day with many corners cut to get the stuff gone.
Old boy I worked with years ago spent the months after VE Day involved in the writing off mountains of stuff.

Where it got interesting was the ‘written off charge’ stuff.
It was supposed to be demilitarised, guns cut or removed, radios etc, and things like the chassis rails cut on trucks. All supposed to be overseen and recorded for returns to the Americans.

Time being short, and people in short supply too, the British sub contracted much of the getting rid of Lend Lease gear to local scrappies and businesses. The Americans on the other hand had dozens if specialist reclamation units whose sole job was doing it.

So, one load of trucks Jim watches written off, the scrappy just cut the horns off the arse of one the chassis.

No ones said you has to check he’d cut the other trucks. Smart chaps made a tidy sum by such ruses.

Much less chance with planes, they were normally destroyed in situ by their squadrons.

There’s that photo Mosquitos all placed on there noses like sardines, just to be set fire to ... gut wrenching!!!
