The Evil British Empire

The following line about the foreword writer of Grasse's...errm, 'book' should tell you all you need to know about this little money-spinner:
"Penny Rimbaud is an author, poet, performance artist and cultural terrorist."

In reading parts of the site, it's rather tongue in cheek I think. I suspect it's a WAH site.

Here's a couple of examples:

The Facts: Is this for Real?

Yes. Any student of world history will tell you that if he had to pick a single nation to pin all the world's troubles on, Britain is far and away the obvious choice. There is plenty of precedent of countries paying off their victims in cash. The Nazis had to pay off the Jews. The U.S. government has settled with many Indian tribes, offering them land, lucrative casino rights, and in some cases, cash. We, the International Coalition for British Reparations, are asking that the greatest criminal nation on earth—the British—pay up as well.
My bold. Surely he's taking the piss?

Genocide. Modern Britain was founded through the systematic erasure of indigenous culture and language. The English rounded up natives, seized their property, and forced them to relinquish their heritage and take on British language and culture as their own. Anyone who dissented faced extermination. This practice began in Scotland, Wales and Ireland and soon spread all over the world, where the British Empire plundered natural resources and enslaved native peoples then left without building the stable infrastructure or governments necessary for self-sufficiency.
Oh, come on; he is taking the piss.

Bad Inventions. Machine guns, slums, prisons, child labor, bad hygiene, the Black Plague, concentration camps, you name it. If it hurts people, the British probably came up with it.
Strangely enough, Britain has been very aggressive about making other countries pay for their historical misdeeds. Like a herd of raging soccer hooligans looting their rival's capital after a victory, they've extracted exorbitant reparations payments from Germany, France, and China, among others. Now it's their turn to pay.
It gets funnier the more you read.

Check out the summary of his book: (I may have to get this as stocking fillers for my friends and family):

The Evil Empire: 101 Ways That England Ruined the World

They invented slums. They invented child labor. They put Saddam Hussein in power. They burned Joan of Arc at the stake, and they enslaved the globe to get their tea fix. We're talking about England, of course, and the terrible evils they've set loose on the world. In The Evil Empire, American author Steven Grasse documents the 101 worst atrocities of Mother England everything from foxhunting to the invention of the concentration camp. With an irreverent mix of historical facts, smart commentary, and red-blooded American arrogance, Grasse offers a devastating critique of the country that gave us the machine gun, factory labor, and the metric system. Publishing just in time for the Queen's birthday (April 21), The Evil Empire is essential reading for true-blue Americans and others oppressed by the English throughout history.

And I'm sure Mr Gatling would not be pleased to have the Machine Gun called a British invention. Even Hiram Maxim was a Yank - he had to come over here to make money properly, though, as the Yanks had at the time insufficient enemies to make a large army worthwhile, having already exterminated most of the Natives by then :)

Overall though, he's got a point. It often takes a Brit to invent/discover something - Penicillin, Alpha and Beta Particles, Concentration Camps, LCDs, MP3 Players - but some foreign Johnny will be the one to make them work really well and use the discovery on an industrial scale :)

Yes, the concept of anybody inventing the Plague is clearly insane. Child labour has clearly been around since children were invented (yes, I know ...) And who, in their right minds, would claim to be a "cultural studies analyst"?

Of course, the link at the bottom - www.arcadiaproject.net:

"The Arcadia Project is a sequence of six projects that together form a phenomenology of attentional economics and American pop culture at the beginning of the 21st century."
Seems to suggest it was designed to see if it could get anybody to take it seriously. So a little deeper digging:

I demanded an absurdly large sum--more than thirty trillion dollars--in "reparations" from the British government for the misdeeds it has inflicted upon America and the world. I formed a group called the International Committee for British Reparations, which held a press conference and launched an online campaign demanding payment of the thirty trillion. We collected thousands of signatures from aggrieved citizens all over the world. Once again I showed how easy it is to obtain legitimacy in a 24-hour news cycle world with an insatiable desire for content.

With a website and a microphone, I established myself as a bona fide international mediator within a few weeks. We quickly won a tremendous amount of attention from the British media. I appeared on the BBC five times and was a guest of the hit television program, the Richard and Judy Show. The Daily Mail wrote about my ideas in a two-page spread. Back home, I began receiving hundreds of angry email and letters from British citizens, some threatening me with death. The hatred and hypersensitivity laying dormant in Britain's nationalist/empirialist ego spilled out all over the Internet, with loyalist bloggers attempting to refute my charges and calling for my head. It felt like 1776 all over again.
So :thumright: to the Daily Fail for another bit of well researched journalism! Now go and check out "bikini bandits": The Arcadia Project: Bikini Bandits

I agree with Mr Grasse, the British Empire, which included the Scots, Welsh and Irish, who he also includes on the oppressed team, were definitely evil, I know this to be true because;

They turned me into a newt! (I got better.)

Hmm, I must admit I first thought it was the usual ambulance chasing Lawyers like the odious Phil Shiner, who is always trying to feed his snout by encouraging various terrorist's to sue the British Army/Government or officials for infringing the scrotes human rights!
Turns out he is a yank with a massive inferiority complex and has impeccable credentials NOT, see here :- "Grasse is a cultural studies analyst and media communications expert", whoop de doo, impressed I am not!
He can be lumped with all the other heaps of excreta, Shiner, Galloway, Blair et al, whose raison d'etre is to make obscene ammounts of money whilst treacherously denigrating their country!
Having been a member of our Colonial services in the dying days of Empire, I can categorically say most of what he says is absolute BOLLOCKS!
Yes our country did figure in the slave trade, as did Spain, Portugal, France & others including the Arabs of N.Africa and the Middle East! Not forgetting ALL of the Great Empires in History, Egyptian, Persian, Greek, Roman & Ottoman, Oh and the Incan & Mayan as well, those pyramids didn't build themselves you know! However ours was the first country to actually abolish it in the 1830's, nearly 40 years before Abe Lincoln got a concience! Our navy actually had anti slavery patrols off the coast of Africa for the next 100 years! It is believed that Slavery & Slave trading still exists up to this day in Sudan :- Sudan, Genocide and Slavery
My own Police force in N. Rhodesia, along with several others in Central Africa was formed in the late 19th Century to protect the indiginous African tribes in the area along with the European Missionaries who had gone there to spread the gospel, from predation by Arab led slavers, NOT to grab land! The infrastructure we left was sound, the neglect of it and the corruption of the African leaders who insisted on their independence long before their counties were ready for it, has led to the return of tribalism, coups, countercoups, wars & genocide!
This has been covered more extensively on another earlier thread!

I've posted a couple of times today without an 'edit post' button being available.

Edited to add - ironically enough, not this one.

Turns out he is a reasonably rich Yank punk guerilla marketing enthusiast who created the site as what we would probably call a wah and he did it to prove a point (not that I actually understand exactly what point he was trying to make beyond 'the Outrage Bus can never be too big or too fast'). Check out his explanation here.

With Evil Empire, my polemic against Britain, I attempted to rekindle the original fires of nationalism laying dormant in the American heart. Like the popular press at the dawn of American nation, I adulterated truths with half-truths. I salted my arguments with ad hominem attacks. These were blatantly inflammatory attempts to inspire hatred of America's mother country. I tried to linguistically represent the violence that comes with independence, that moment when the Enlightenment desire to see the world anew achieves full self-consciousness, demanding a sudden and painful break with the old order of sovereignty.
He has done equivalent stunts a number of other times ...

Interesting you should bring up Sudan, I've just finished re-reading: Khartoum: The Ultimate Imperial Adventure: Amazon.co.uk: Michael Asher: Books, cracking book btw, and one everyone should read. It would appear that a significant component of the Janjaweed comprises the Baggara, a quite remarkable warrior race of herders with a propensity for rape, pillage and war. The Janjaweed are their spiritual, cultural and genetic inheritors, and when you consider they were employed by al-Bashir, who was installed by
Turabi and his brother-in-law, Sadiq al-Mahdi, grandson of Mohammad Ahmad [the Mahdi]
. They continue practice of slavery today appropriating victims fom the Dinka, Nuba and others who we protected and fought so well for us many years back (and I say to many my more wooly lefty colleages, not me I not a wooly lefty, I'm razor sharp steel edged pragmatic lefty me , I'm sure you'll all agree , we still do have a responsibility to these people, but not in the way they [the lefties] often think, but I digress again.)
