  1. Well, WWI finally ends of Sunday when Germany coughs up the final payment under the Treaty of Versailles 1919 - some $ 97 Million US in reparations to Belgium and France for catching them with their pants down and to repay the ' Allies' some of the expenses of having to show up and whup the Kaiser.

one of the reasons Germany was in such crap after WWI and one of the reasons Hitler was miffed over the state of the country and started it all up again in '39.

Anyway, not sure who gets to cash the cheque but it seems like an excuse [ if one is needed ] to raise a glass or two at the local in memory of the War To End All Wars.

  3. I'm stunned, I thought that given the consequences of the Treaty of Versaille, it would have been quietly sidelined. It was widely recognised as too harsh and as a direct consequence Hitler came to power and killed millions. Given that after the second world war, instead of fines the Americans poured billions of pounds into West Germany couldn't the Germans have been forgive the money.

It's only a handful of years since the UK made the last payment to the Americans for lend-lease in WW2. Expensive business, these world wars.

Versailles was not too harsh, that idea is merely the Germans trying to excuse their inexcusable and indeed barbaric behaviour, and trying to pretend that they didn;t deserve to pay up for all the appalling damage they had done 1914-18.

Versailles led directly to German hyper-inflation, the collapse of the Weimar Republic and the rise of National Socialism. That's not a German excuse, it's the generally accepted historical view of the 1920s and 30s, unless there's been some major revisionism that's entirely passed me by.

  7. Versaille Treaty = WW2, if one treaty meant to punish a country for war wasnt the perfect reason for another i dont what was.
  8. Revising the historical facts of WW1 and WW2 is a common Russian practice which has caught on in Amerikan internet warrior circles. Nothing surprises me any more.
  9. Only 5 years. Not bad really.....
