The Emperor Mongs Pronouncements

Thomas Watson sr allegedly said that there was no point IBM going into computers as there would only be a need for four (?) of them. Fortunately for IBM his son put him right and all went well until IBM totally missed the point about personal computing and got shafted by Bill Gates.
Ah, actually, IBM were being flogged by Apple and other personal computer makers who got in the market early. They had to play catch up badly, both in terms of hardware and software. They caught up pretty quickly with the hardware making a PC using off the shelf components, but had to go to Bill Gates for the software (MSDOS). They later tried making their own operating system (OS/2) to end dependancy on Microsoft, but contracted Microsoft to make it. Bill didn't take too kindly to making the product that was supposed to kill the new OS, Windows.

I believe IBM wanted to keep OS2 for the IBM PC only, so Bill flogged Windows to all the cheaper PC manufacturers (Compaq being the first) who copied IBM's machine with even cheaper off the shelf parts and thus established dominance on the PC operating system market.

IBM wanted to target OS/2 as a business OS, and completely missed the home computer market. Billy G realised that people wanted work and home tech on the same OS.

OS/2 did a whole lot more than Windows, about 10 years before Windows managed it, but because IBM didn't promote the home environment for OS/2, they lost out big time.

OS/2 was a decent real-time operating system, and at one point had nearly the same number of copies running out in the world, but as these were mainly Point-of-Sale systems and ATMs, no-one noticed, apart from Microsoft who needed to get Windows/NT out there as fast as possible and then subsequently embed Windows XP into said POS and ATMs.

Into the 21st century, when you opened the wardrobe door into an IBM mainframe, the most recognisable objects you'd see were two IBM ThinkPads. The first one running OS/2 flawlessly 24/7/365 monitoring the mainframe microcode and health testing components. Any microcode updates came in, the ThinkPad updated it. Any component showed sign of suboptimal performance, the ThinkPad phoned home, ordered the despatch of a part and an engineer. There are tales of engineers arriving on customer sites, "I'm here to fix the mainframe."

"It isn't broke... Is that why this widget arrived yesterday?!?"

Purpose of the second ThinkPad I hear you ask. It monitored the first ThinkPad for signs of failure.

Not quite.

IBM contracted MicroSoft to write an OS for their PC, PC/DOS, considered by most to be better than the bloated, but functionally similar MS/DOS. Having done so, IBM contracted MicroSoft to write a second, more powerful, graphical OS, OS/2 to run on new technology RISC architecture. During this period, there were creative differences. The existing OS code was shared. MicroSoft used it to create Windows NT (New Technology).

There was a story that much of the deep code on NT was untouched. It was said that if you inserted a non-system diskette into the A-drive on an NT box and booted it, the error message that came up was an OS/2 message. Well into the 21st century, our team used a networked NT box to share a data drive. So one day I tried booting it with a non-system diskette. Sure enough, OS/2 message.

Parrot Taken Into Custody After Allegedly Alerting Crack Dealers to Police

A parrot that authorities say was trained to alert drug dealers to the presence of police has been apprehended.

Brazilian news reports detailed the parrot's seizing, which went down amid the Northern Brazil raid of a property where a couple was accused of selling crack. The parrot has not been named in reports but is said by regional police to have been trained by the suspects to shout about cops' looming presence in the Vila Irmã Dulce community.

"So far [the parrot] hasn't made a sound … completely silent," a local reporter said of the bird, who's said to be "super obedient."

At least Polly knows when to keep it's mouth shut.

ps: I did have to check whether the Date on the report was April 1st.

Apropos, if you buy a small black bird and teach it to swear would you be prosecuted for corrupting a mynah...?
