The British Government. What a bunch of Cnuts. 2000 Chinese sailors who served Britain forcibly deported after the war.

Home Office agrees to look into the fate of Chinese sailors deported after the war

We have had the famous but now deceased thread about the Chinese, but now here is one about the British government who in 1946 forcibly deported 2,000 Chinese sailors who had served in the Merchant Navy in World War Two risking their lives in the Atlantic and Arctic among others. Most were based in Liverpool and many had familly here who never found out what happened to them.

Now this is published in the Guardian so may not be the full story, but on the face of it doesn't show the then government in a very good light. And this was Attlee's Labour administration.

And what exactly is the purpose of publicising an event, 80 years ago, where all participants are probably dead and it wasn't publicised at the time?

Oh right, 'The Guardian'

Justice for their children, On the face of it its an unjustified travesty - Even if they were here illigally pre war - Id argue wartime service in the MN warranted citizenship.

It is however unfortunate that its already been decided it was racist before any investigation,
We hoofed out Polish Servicemen at the same time, I doubt many of them were non white..

Id rather the investigation / inquiry was conducted with an open mind - the current attitude that if the victim is non white the motive is racist will not serve us well.

I sent the Guardian a hot tip that at the same time the Matabele had genocided the Northern Rhodesia Bush People in order to steal their land and cattle without fear of later reprisals by the former owners. I CC'd BLM in to ensure they investigate with due diligence.

1946 you say? Evil Tories Grr government? Not surprised the Grauniad are all over it. Hang on. Wait. 1946? But, but we didn't have an Evil Tories Grr government in 1946. The Fragrant Labour Party had power briefly.

How old was Saint Maggie in 1946? I bet it was her fault.

The story sent my virtual 'Not Getting the Full Story Meter' needle swinging.

Given that in all likelihood, many thousands of Chinese sailors were recruited for the Merchant Navy, why 2000?
Sounds like a figure plucked out the the air.

According to Kim Johnson Lab, Liverpool Riverside) they were accused of

<<Unknown to the families, behind closed doors, in the corridors of power, decisions to remove their unwelcome presence were set in motion. Intent on expelling these so-called “undesirables”, the Home Office, under the post-war Attlee Government, issued instructions to deny their right to work onshore. Immigration officers began to amend the papers carried by Chinese seamen. This harassment, however, did not go far enough to produce the intended result, so a plan was set in motion in the depths of this Parliament for mass forcible repatriation.

In October 1945, a secret meeting was called in Whitehall, which sparked the opening of a new file, titled “Compulsory repatriation of undesirable Chinese seamen”. The Home Office decreed that its contents were not to be discussed in the House of Commons, the Lords or with the press, or to be acknowledged to the public. At this meeting, it was alleged that the seamen had caused trouble with the police, and that their wives were no more than prostitutes, but no evidence has ever been produced to justify those scandalous claims. Their revelation has caused untold distress to the descendants of these seamen, many of whom were brought up by their stalwart mothers, facing poverty and isolation after their fathers were forcibly repatriated.>>

Now, undesirable could mean because racist of their skin colour or perhaps maybe because of their behaviour,.At this distance in time, it's really a case of it being what you want it to mean.
However, I do hope among the deported were these circa 50 undesirables;
for which there is (quote) 'Scandalous claim for which there is no evidence'

I was told about this years ago, but just put it down to Chinese whispers.

If you'd read the OP's post in full before jumping on the Tory Outrage Bus, you would have found - 'And this was Attlee's Labour administration.'

From the article:

In a debate in the House of Commons on Wednesday, Liverpool Riverside MP Kim Johnson, who brought the campaign to parliament, described the events as “one of the most nakedly racist actions ever undertaken by the British government” and “a shameful stain on our history”.

Have we British ever, in the whole of our vile, disgusting, and evil existence, done anything that wasn't racist or oppressive?

Begs the question that given we are more horrible than Attila the Hun, or any of the current rulers in the middle east and have been so since Elizabethan times.

Why the hell have people migrated here of their own free will for the last half millennium?

Number deported appears to increase in the telling
Any decrease on 2000 ?
<< In the early 1940s, an estimated 20,000 Chinese merchant sailors were recruited into the British Merchant Navy and, almost entirely based in Liverpool, around 300 of these married or cohabitated with local women. Although the Chinese sailors played a vital role in Britain’s warfare, their demands for the same pay and equal treatment as local sailors in 1942, which led to strike action, saw them labelled as troublemakers. Post-war, the government, in collusion with the shipping companies, were keen to rid Liverpool of what they saw as an ‘undesirable element’ and, in October 1945, the Home Office opened a file on ‘the compulsory repatriation of undesirable Chinese seamen at Liverpool’.

As has been identified through recently released records, although many of the sailors were not reluctant to return to China given the hostile conditions in Liverpool, some of those who had families were not given an opportunity to stay, as the law prescribed. Although we do not know exactly how many Chinese seamen were deported, including those who had relationships and families with local women, it is estimated that more than 200 men with dependents were suddenly and forcefully repatriated, leaving behind distraught families who believed themselves abandoned.>>

They weren't here illegally. They were recruited from China specifically to help the war effort and then treated disgracefully when the war was over.
