The Biden Presidency

War Hero
Poor old Biden. I really think the people who put him through this over the past year should be charged with elder abuse.

He really doesn't know what's going on. The government didn't send him a plane to come over to DC so he had to get his own flight. No mass of Biden supporters cheering him on (and please no COVID excuse because it hasn't stopped Trump supporters). Trump went to Florida taking the nuclear football (i.e. the codes with him), so it wasn't passed on to Biden. The Pentagon refuses to cooperate with his team and give them information about ongoing operations. DC is literally a prison and is still in military lock-down. No flag flying over the Whitehouse which is unprecedented.

Why are they putting Biden through this humiliation?!

This ain't over folks. Get your popcorn.
There are three nuclear footballs - Trump's was deactivated at noon when Biden’s was activated. As for the crowds, it was due to COVID. Biden takes it seriously, unlike Trump.

As for the flag, Trump didn't declare martial law and there is a flag flying.

It is over - there will be no Storm.

yet huge numbers of Americans aspire to a military or .Gov job where they get the equivalent of the much derided ’socialised medicine‘ as a perk of the job.

I don‘t think there are too many users of the VA health system that have alternatives. It is much-derided for good reason.

The Oil that the U.S of A greedily gulps from the land of Maple Syrup will continue trucking down south of the border unabated - pipeline or not.

The reality is the pipeline was in both countries interest.

“The demand for heavy oil in the world doesn’t change whether Keystone XL happens or not,” said Dennis McConaghy, a retired TransCanada executive. “It’s just where it’s sourced. Those refineries are still going to run on heavy oil.”

Without a pipeline to move bottlenecked bitumen from Canada to U.S. coastal refineries could be forced to import from countries like Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Russia which will mean higher prices of refined oil for the North American market.

“Connecting by pipeline within North America is the most secure way to feed those refineries,” a spokesperson said, noting that Canada has higher environmental oversight and labour standards than do many other oil producing countries.

Justin will be having a chat with Sleepy ASAP but nothing has ever stopped the USA of kicking themselves or Canada in the balls before so why expect a change now.

Stacker is correct it may cost a billion $$'s but having said that it's cheap compared to Chumps Tariffs that cost $13 Billion (that you and we pay for).
Keystone XL is not the only pipeline in the works. Between Transmountain, Line 3, diluent pipeline reversals, and various minor capacity increases on other lines, Canada will have more than enough new export pipeline capacity to last beyond when Biden has returned to dust.

If and when we need another new pipeline beyond those, general opinion seems to be moving further towards we need to continue to diversify trade away from the US and look for other trading partners and allies. That's a topic for another thread however.

What may be an immediate consequence of this though is that Biden cancelling the pipeline approval without talking to Canada about it first will be seen as a diplomatic slight. There have been several reports in the press that Canada will want something in return. The most common suggestion as to what this may be is for the US to drop charges against Meng Wanzhou, the senior Huawei executive that the US is trying to extradite. Canada would then send Meng back to China, and China in return would release Kovrig and Spavor. That would take that hot potato off Ottawa's hands in return for Ottawa not taking offence at the pipeline issue.

As for Alberta being out of pocket over their investment in Keystone XL, everyone thought that Kenny was being reckless when he gambled the taxpayer's money on a project that he would have known was a political football in the US. But then again, Kenny is an idiot. Alberta will sue the US over the cancellation and try to get their investment back.

But yes my inlaws are the type of people that many on this forum would look down upon.

That’s quite unkind. Us British are fair minded and even handed, we don’t look down on your in laws, we look down on all Americans.

So much stupidity in just one post.

The government didn't send him a plane to come over to DC so he had to get his own flight.

Trump didn't send him a plane. It is, usually, a courtesy extended by the outgoing President to his successor. Oddly enough, 45 wasn't big on courtesy.

No mass of Biden supporters cheering him on (and please no COVID excuse because it hasn't stopped Trump supporters).

Nope and the stupidity of Trump supporters flocking to large events, many of them not wearing masks, isn't lost on medics, scientists nor anybody else with a reading and comprehension age of over 16, Actually, the science of wearing masks and social distancing isn't that complicated at all so, perhaps, 12.

Trump went to Florida taking the nuclear football (i.e. the codes with him), so it wasn't passed on to Biden.

Traditionally, you know, on those occasions where the outgoing President has the decency* to attend his successor's inauguration, the officer carrying the football is stood behind the podium, usually hidden by a pillar. Next to him is he office who will receive the football. At precisely 12pm the exchange is made and it is never publicly seen. The 'football' itself is not deactivated (the suitcase contains files and a secure comms system, no big red buttons) however the 'biscuit' (the card with the codes) is deactivated and the new one activated.

In this instance a military aide will accompany Trump to Florida with one of the footballs and that Trump will retain authority to launch a nuclear strike until 11:59:59 a.m. Wednesday. Trump's being physically out of Washington will not affect his launch authority or access to the football until noon. (There are multiple footballs that allow a president to launch a military strike while traveling.)

Another military aide with a second nuclear football will hand over the authority to Biden once he is sworn in, the official said, and the military aide with Trump will bring the football back to Washington.

The Pentagon refuses to cooperate with his team and give them information about ongoing operations.

Like a stopped clock, you are right. Disgraceful that civil servants should obstruct the will of the people. Their job is not to like it.

DC is literally a prison and is still in military lock-down.

Can you think of any reason, any reason at all, that the National Guard was brought in for inauguration day?

No flag flying over the Whitehouse which is unprecedented.

False. Utterly, demonstrably and proven false.

It is really tempting just to call you a cock and be done with it but it is, infinitely, more satisfying to prove you wrong with facts rather than conjecture and conspiracy theory.

*see note above on 'courtesy'.

As embarrassed as most Western political leaders since the 1970s: Callaghan in the UK, Bush Snr in the USA, Gorton in Australia, Pearson in Canada as the last with military service.

Given that Biden's son Beau served a year in Iraq, I'd say he's much closer to the gravity of sending troops into harm's way than most of his contemporaries.
Good point though are the other than US folk, Commanders in Chief? Probably a pedantic point but one worth a comment reinforced by "Lions led by donkeys."

...to the strains of Village People belting out YMCA.... How bizarre... did the Beeb overdub the backing music just to make it seem more stupid.?. at least Trump didn't start doing the YMCA actions...
If you’ve watched any of trumps appearances then you would know that there’s no need to fake his soundtrack to make him look stupid
He does like a bit of the Village People and their friends

Given the responses you’ve had pointing out the stupidity and false claims you make such as the above post, don’t you ever think or self reflect on whether you may need to re evaluate your perceptions and world view? That maybe your grasp of facts and why events happen the way they do is incorrect?

As a for instance, what strange echo chamber do you live in and who are you listening to to think there was no flag flying over the White House.

Biden wants to build unity and his first action, presumably after a visit to the bog. Was to sign away all Trumps handiwork in an hour. Funny sort of unity; don't bother to take your time and negotiate with the other side. What the media miss is the action speaks louder than the warm words.

Rejoining WHO and the Paris Climate Accord, regardless of your views on those organisations, was a clear statement to the world that America is rejoining the international community rather than remaining in, less than, splendid isolation.

I wonder if a Biden of 20-30 years ago, would have been so quick to sign away political capital, in pursuit of making statements to a fictional community... It would have been far better to wait a few weeks and negotiate compromises with the other side, to show willing, in pursuit of this unity bollox and do the politics the way everyone who hated trump said was absent and he was supposedly a master of.

if an un house trained dog shits on the carpet, it’s only to be expected the owner will pick up the turds and flush them down the toilet.

Trump reduced America's standing in the world by such a margin that Biden would have been wise to do what he did, to restore political capital, even if he didn't want to (which clearly he did).
