Blunkett tight-lipped over 'affair'
08:20am 15th August 2004
Home Secretary David Blunkett has refused to discuss newspaper claims that he is having an affair with a married mother.
In a statement, Mr Blunkett, 57, insisted that his private life had no bearing on his role as Home Secretary.

According to the News of the World, the Sheffield Brightside MP has been seeing the woman, who is in her 40s and has one child, for three years. The newspaper did not name the woman.

In a statement Mr Blunkett, who has three sons from his former marriage, said: "After my divorce I decided not to talk again about my subsequent private life.
"I have stuck to that principle over the years, whatever the pressure to confirm or deny a particular story and defended all politicians' right to a degree of privacy in their private life.

"I am adhering to this approach now.

"My personal life is my business and has never compromised my jobs as an MP and Cabinet minister.

"Anyone purporting to speak about my private life does so without knowledge or authority."

According to the News of the World, Mr Blunkett and the woman were introduced in 2001 and have met discreetly in London and in the countryside.

A Downing Street spokesman said: "The Home Secretary's private life is a private matter. The Prime Minister thinks he is doing an excellent job as Home Secretary."
The dirty little imp! Obviously he can't wait for 72 virgins in Paradise, unlike his AQ opposite number (ie bearded lunatic with extreme views).

The usual inaccurate reporting by a journo, or a miracle? I think we should be told....

They are, after all, a special breed, not to be compared with the rabble over which they rule.

The latter have no right to any "degree of privacy" whatsoever.
