I just caught the end of The Archers and heard Alice Alridge announce her intent to join the RAF to cries of dismay from her family. The objections did not focus on a rational (and topical) desire not to see her posted to Iraq and get mortared in Basrah Air Station. Instead, I struggled not to laugh when the opinion was offered that she would not "cope with all the discipline after her pampered lifestyle." It strikes (pun intended) me that she has made the perfect choice of service in order to maintain the lifestyle to which she has become accustomed. Cue rustling of the Daily Telegraph and harrumphing about Samsonite suitcases on C130s and 4* hotels etc.
