Tentage for a small HQ

#1
Hello there.

I've been tasked with devising a plan for a mobile HQ for a specialist unit. Unfortunately we have not recruited a QM yet, and I know little about tents other than those used in infantry. My basic plan, based on a BG HQ, was for a cross shape made up of 5 12x12 tents, one in the middle and four making the crosses. However it appears this is not big enough. Does anyone know the sizes of larger tents in use in the army? And can anyone point me to info on design of such setups, SOPs etc. We also need a large briefing tent, and even jooining 2 12x12 isnt big enough. Help!

Hello there

There are Command Tents assembly I believe called DRASH tents (not sure if thats a nick name or actual name) they are rather hoopy and link in a tunnel format to almost any shape they are fast assembly/put up (bit like an umberella) and not as labourious as the old 9x9 or 12 x 12 poles.
If you need bigger tents than 12 x 12 the next size uo is 18x24. saw both in use in the sand pit.

Hope this helps

Cheers

Yeah its DRASH (Deployable Rapid Assembly Shelter). Its a piece of piss to put up if you know about it, warm in winter, cool in summer, nice and white inside... not to bad at all. Its not quite like an umbrella, but all the poles etc stay in it and it kind of fold into itself when you pack it up. http://www.drash.com/

The website has got all the info on sizes etc, but im not sure if the army has all of these.

If you're going to use normal tentage then try and get hold of some CMTs! We're all about the tentage!

If you can get up to 2 Md Bde at Towthorpe Lines (its in Strensall, Yorks.) They have a permanent CP set up in the "Dutch Barn". It will be a lot larger than what you're thinking of though it'l let you get inside them and have a look. And the G1098 store there is packed full of all kinds of tent wonders. Its a Medic camp, so I can't think why they would let you up there if you're not, but that's where I saw it last.

Where about are you and have you got any Med units near to you? I'm not just trying to blow my own trumpet (nearly broke my back trying...) but the Medics use sh!t loads of tentage, so they'll probs be the best people to talk to.

Your obviously not talking about the worse purchase of military equipment since Olaf the Hairy bought 1000 viking helmets with the horns on the inside.

Was in the trials unit that had it 1996, utter $hite.

Speak to your corps/arms (AS&D) equipment sponsor and see what you are likely to get for a unit of your size/role. There is no point planning the Albert Hall when you may only be funded for minimal tentage.

Also the A&SD is best placed to tell you of any similar units in role and seek out there advice.

My opinion is that HQ should be as small as practible as you only have to take them down usually in the dark cold and rain

If you are not allocated sufficient tentage or have delays in receiving it in timerefer to LANDSO 4407 (Short Term Loans).

Hope this helps

Take it you're not a big fan then! I've only ever put the stuff up or taken it down, and I found that quite easy, ther rest of it is what I was told.

I'm more of a canvas man myself anyway.

DRASH- Great on flat prepared ground, poor on anything else. Expensive to repair and it wasnt squaddie proof.

I thought they had got rid of it as stretchers would fit through the doors, the MoD didnt buy all the add-ons such as trailers and repair kits.

I had soldiers attempting to repair ours with spare stuff the company left with us when the Unit trialled it.

Marks out of 10- 2. Use GS canvas at least it smells nice.

What do you need fcuk off big tents for if you're in a... erm... 'special' unit? Enormous tentage? Hmm, sounds a bit rude? Never in my day etc. Just a 320 whip poking out of a poncho hood - and we were lucky!

i've had to replace a few poles on a DRASH in my time. completely none-soldier proof, don't even start me off. utter pain in arrse. stick to 12x16 ya can even go tac with them...replaces beret and exits left.

We use an 18 X 24 with two 9 X 9 at one end and a 12 X 12 and a 9 X 9 at the other as a BGHQ, works well just a little manpower intensive to put up!!! Not too bad if you can get rid of the BG Staff somewhere, then it can be erected quite quickly!!!!! :D

I know Tactical Med Wing at RAF Lyneham had DRASH tentage till at least last summer, though they were to had these over to the army & get 12x12 type tentage back in the near future, as the DRASH tents were not NBC proof or some similar reason, so I was told.
