Strange position when a foreign office mandarin appears to be the power behind the defence throne yet refuses scrutiny from the Defence Select Committee.

No doubt he has some waffly bollocks to hide behind, seems rather banana republic given the increased attention defence is receiving.

West nibbles away, but only in order to discredit the Conservatives, and very selectively - have never heard of him criticising Brown's inflating the cost of the carriers by delaying them for instance.

@alfred_the_great did say in the main ..

It's all rather convoluted trying to figure out how each star is trying to protect their own service, which CS mandarin is hoping to get an extra lorry load of paperclips and how the politicians are trying to save their own necks...

Hadn't even considered the political affiliations of the stars. :)
  6. West and Dannatt are the harbingers of explicitly affiliated ex-VSOs.

  10. One would hope that in such an instance, the system would be able to at least identify the relevent dinosaurii and use them as advisors/trainers/coaches. Industry has now started to do this by maintaining skills and knowledge registers. Rank is only as useful as you want it to be..!

maybe we could do the same..? After all this is what J1/HR is actually supposed to do, instead of playing at back stabee games all the time...!
  11. As a capability we have regenerated it, and would be able to do it should the balloon go up. There would naturally be a steep learning curve and many issues.

But perhaps I'm being slightly pessimistic, we'd struggle as much as everyone else in the 'conventional' warfare sense. We are out of practice when it comes to moving large formations around.
  12. It's just like moving small formations around... only bigger!

  13. Shhhh you'll give the game away.

I also should've said - 'As an Army we are out of practice...'

  15. Here is another view on the matter, citing small UK forces since the 1700's, which expanded when required.
He doesn't claim it to be an ideal solution but the way things have always been done.
Capitalists@Work: UK armed forces. How big is big enough?
Worth looking at various comments below the article in which there are some interesting observations and suggestions.
