Tasers for all Cops?

It's a stop gap. Only a fully armed service would have the ability to defend itself and the public. Taser doesn't work on people with thick coats, is only effective if the subject is within 15 feet of you, is inaccurate, and slow to reload.

It's better than nothing though I suppose.

Good or Bad idea?

All front-line police in England and Wales should be offered Tasers in light of the increased terrorism threat, the head of the Police Federation says.

^ That - it's all right for a bit of self defence and I don't begrudge a copper that.

BUT no using it just because people are being a pain in the arse, like they do in the states.

What's your opinion on the matter?
He doesn't have one, he just spouts news links as if we wouldn't know where to find the news, the dull ****.

That's the main reason for being routinely armed as far as I'm concerned . You then maintain a Cadre of higher trained officer for other incidents.

I wouldn't use the states as a yardstick for routine arming. Other western countries manage quite well including their cousins north of the border.

Just so you are aware TASERS are less lethal not non lethal there have been some 150 deaths reported due to them.
Was it the Taser that killed them or a pre existing medical condition? The individuals that died put themselves in a position that the officer with the taser thought deploying taser was the best option. So you can't really blame the taser for their death.

The Police Federation have a valid point in 'requesting/recommending' arming officers due to the current heighten threat level.

However, it's only a recommendation and they're fully aware the main obstacles are:
Individual forces choices
Overall cost of issue, and ongoing training required to meet the same standards
The Police budget is tighter than ever before, no cash to implement.

So in summary, unless the largest towns & cities (whom many specialist are already taser issued) a nationwide issue of taser bobbies on the beat are highly unlikely.

Yeah, I know. What I meant is that the USA is routinely used as a measure of how cops act when armed. What I was getting at was that other western police services, including Canada, manage to conduct their business quite well without the negative perceptions that seem to surround policing in the states.

I think good idea, if the individual wishes it, but with rigorous ROE and training. For the perps do as your told and you won't get hurt.

If by 'current heightened threat level' they mean 'terrorism', then I cannot think of a more inappropriate and ineffectual piece of equipment to deploy in those circumstances... except possibly, a rolled up newspaper.

If they are issuing plod tazers in relation 'to a perceived terrorist threat' they need to take their collective heads for a shit. Stop poncing about and give them something they can use to protect themselves and the Public from Islamic Loons on a Mission. At the very least a Glock.

And they haven't stopped single patrol either, so the powers that be don't really give a shit anyway.
And not for me as I've just resigned.

You alarmist knob. There's no needs for TASER in relation to CT threat. I've been reminded not to travel in half blues and watch what I put on faceache.

I mean, it's not like ACPO and the polfed could say we need taser due to less police, back up further away and increased levels of violence towards police.

Goodness, that could be awkward during election season.
