Tameron / Sigma V Canon

Gents,
I looking for some advice, my wife is an avid photographer and very good, I on the hand, know nothing about it. So, I’ll quote some things that I know nothing about but would like to please the Mrs.
She has a few Canon cameras, not least a 5D mk 3 and a 5D mk 1. She also has some decent lenses, one of which is a Canon 100-300 EF.
So I asks what she’d like for Christmas and she said she’d really like a new lens but it’s far too expensive, £2200 for the Canon version, it’s a 100-400 EF.
So my question is two part, what does the 100-400 give her that the 100-300 can’t? And is either the Sigma 100-400 for Canon or the Tameron 100-400 for Canon anywhere near as good, is it even comparable or am I wasting my money? The Sigma and Tameron retail at between £650 & £700. Which is not cheap, but tolerable.

had a look online for any reviews? had a look for any used examples? I don't know who the Canon equivalent are but I've bought used from Greys of Westminster before now and I'd do so again in a second.

Are they still there?

I've bought from SLR Hut ( also grey - but Grey imports) best prices I've found for Sony.

What does she want the lens for? I have both the 100-300 70-200mm and 100-400mm Canon L-series lenses and could upgrade further, but my next lens will be a Canon macro L-series because I would like to get into macro photography more.

Just for snob value, I would prefer a Canon L-series lens over any other make (even though Sigma make some excellent top-of-the range lenses that are just as good if not better).

ETA - the Mk V Canons are full size sensors, so look for lenses designed for that

Luxury!

I believe that EF are full frame lenses and that EF-S are cropped. Full disclosure: I'm a heathen in that I own Sony kit (bloody E mount).

I do love a bit of macro though.

Correct about the EF being full frame. @mechanicalhorsetrough - take note: a cropped (EF-S) lens will be crap with your wife's full frame 5Ds.

Sony make some great cameras and lenses. Like many, I have stuck with the make for which I have the most kit. (And I also only do still photography.)

The thing with Sigma has always been quality control, it's not up to the same standard as Canon

Great if you get a good lens, not so good if you're unlucky to buy a lemon. One thing to watch especially if you buy them second hand

The Sigma Art lenses are supposed to be a lot better for quality control, but then you're paying more for them and should expect it

Fixation in London is good place to source second hand lenses, they might have seen a lot of press use but they know how to service cameras and lenses as well as anyone

Ill say it - Pics ? either of her work or ideally her, just to have a clearer picture you understand

Have a look at the data:

The canon looks to be slightly faster zoomed right in and It's internal focus (no extending glass).
The Canon is one stop faster at a maximum aperture of 5.6 as opposed to the others which are 6.3. Less relevant now when ISO can be ratched up. Personally I would go for one of the cheaper brands. Unless she is shooting sport I doubt she'd notice the difference. MM

Grays only sell Nikon.

no they don't - I took my D7000 in a few years back for a sensor clean and you might have been excused for thinking it was the first time they'd ever seen a camera. specialists my hairy irish arse.

They've been fine for me, but then I've never taken consumer cameras to them just the pro gear
