  1. Hi all,

After some problems with my medical I've been accepted by the RLC TA. I'm an ex regular (albeit from many years ago) so have an understanding of how things work but I need some advice on the sort of commitment I'd need to give.

I work abroad and only return to the UK a few times a year. I know the minimum number of days I have to serve is 19 but is it feasible to all 19 in one hit? How much notice is normally given for annual exercises etc? How long does basic training last?

And, bearing in mind the recent news, will I have to do anything at all for the first few months?!

  2. It is only 19 days for specialist units and for recent ex-Reg - it is 27 days for Regional TA. You'll normally have to MATTs qualify as well as doing camp / courses in lieu, so I don't think you'll be able to rely on getting it all done in one lump each year. You should talk to your unit and see what you / they are willing to do to sort things out.

Basic training (from memory) can be done in 2 2-week lumps, or as a series of weekends and then a 2-week lump.

Notice - normally plenty - everybody has to arrange time off work.

I'd wait and see - we're promised news today.

  3. Hi,

Thanks for the information. I'll get in touch with the unit and see what they say.
