TA job for my mate.

My mate's a bit bored and has been getting fit. Runs 5k so he's not a complete washout.

Years back he was Merchant Marine and RNR. Doesn't fancy going back to that but wondered about the TA. He's a drilling engineer by trade - offshore work. He's 42. Degrees in geology and so on.

When I said he would be able to get in he said -
maybe if they're upgrading navel gazing to a staff job
What unit would he be best suited to?
Depends what he wants to do.

I wanted Inf - fcuk off too old (at 35).
I sniffed around RE, Sigs (thank fcuk that didn't happen) and then RA but one reason or another always put me off actually signing back on.

Couple of years later, read about the RAuxAF and they snatched my hand off.

I'm RAF Regiment, so Inf trained (bolleaux to anyone who says different). Upside is high age limits, good training / facilities, good support, guaranteed tours. Downside is fcuking long drive and constant carping by Pongoes.

There's also a Tri-Service Int unit, psyops I think, that may stretch him intellectually. Ask 4th_of_foot, he's an old bugger as well.

Dunno about the 'National Units', they tend to recruit specifically for civvy skills employable in a military situation.

Like I said, depends what he wants.
