TA Group B to Group A

#5
Are we talking Group B ACF by any chance ?

I have seen a few back doors direct into the TA. It shouldn't be allowed but it was certainly still going on not so long ago. Mind you that was LONDIST and the chap did have a private income.

You win the prize WC.

Well almost anyway, group B ATC, but ex-inf TA from decades ago.

I'm still trying to find a way round the age restrictions.

The thing is, I have a selection shortly for a specialist unit, and my age is on my CV, but I'm outside the enlistment age for that unit. I'm just curious as to why they have asked me along, if when I get there they are going to say, "oops, sorry, you're too old"

Best you call them and ask - it may save a wasted journey.

Hi MSR,

Crazy thing is, I've had a number of telephone calls with their PSAO type, and he is well aware of my age.

I guess I'll just have to wait and see. Only four weeks to go, I'm just getting impatient :x

Clearly they are going to try and make an exception for you.

Good luck!

Difficulty will be attaining future rank.

My understanding is that if you are Group B, then unless you have done officer career courses, JOTES etc you will revert to Lt on Group A.

I was aware recently of an ACF chap going through Specialist TA selection - not impossible but future may be limited.

Or he will have to sort MK1 and get himself off to JOTAC...

What 'rank' are you at the moment?

As a Gp B you are in a permanent state of 2Lt probation, thus not allowing official promotion to Lt.

If and when you do become Gp A promotion is possible, although normally you will only be considered if you have completed your relevant special to arms/JOTAC courses etc.

According to TA regs, Gp B time DOES count towards your 1 or 2 years probation time although many will claim it doesn't and insist you do it again.

Notwithstanding this, your CO will have the final say anyway.

Good luck.

Flt Lt (Acting, Paid) at present. Substantive rank Fg Off, i.e acting Cpt, substantive Lt. It's a tri-service unit, which is why I wondered about conversion.

I'll be quite happy to sort MK1 and JOTAC if required.

They may, of course, decide that my "specialist" skills are not worth it anyway.

As I said, I'll let you know.

I know of a bloke who was an ACF officer (and ex RN PO) who was transferred to Group A for the express purpose of mobilisation on Telic a couple of years ago - he had some sort of Land or Agriculural Qualification and went to a CIMIC job wearing a GS Corps Capbadge.

Not sure what happened to him since but he was offered an RLC TA post I think poss with the CIMIC Group or at Grantham.

Well, I passed selection for the specialist unit, then they looked into transferring me across from RAF VR(T), to RauxAF.

RAF said no, but I just fell into their upper age limit of 55 (i.e. younger than 56), so was able to attend OASC at Cranwell.

Did that for 4 days starting Sunday, had a great time, passed the apitude test for my chosen specialty, passed the medical, and kicked *rse in the fitness :D

Just have to wait now to see if I performed well enough in the command task, planning ex, and interview.

If successful, I have to do the Reserve Officer's Initial Training course, which is mainly distance learning with three periods at Cranwell, the final one being two weeks attached to a regular course for their final ex etc.

Good luck to you, but surely this topic is misleading.

You are not in TA Group B, you are in the RAF VR (T) and you are not looking to transfer to TA Group A but the RAuxAF.

Yes I realise that Mate, but I couldn't get any help/advice from the crab community, so posted here to see if anyone could help.

Would have preferred to get back into the TA, but age precluded that option :(
