The heart of the site is the forum area, including:
Probably a stupid question, but is it possible to convert from a group B to a group A commission?
Yes, I've seen it done.
The person in question joined his local TA unit and went through the normal officer selection procedure.
Yes it is, but it all depends how you were commissioned.
Very common, as numerous ex OTC types will tell you.
Are we talking Group B ACF by any chance ?
I have seen a few back doors direct into the TA. It shouldn't be allowed but it was certainly still going on not so long ago. Mind you that was LONDIST and the chap did have a private income.
You win the prize WC.
Well almost anyway, group B ATC, but ex-inf TA from decades ago.
I'm still trying to find a way round the age restrictions.
The thing is, I have a selection shortly for a specialist unit, and my age is on my CV, but I'm outside the enlistment age for that unit. I'm just curious as to why they have asked me along, if when I get there they are going to say, "oops, sorry, you're too old"
Best you call them and ask - it may save a wasted journey.
Crazy thing is, I've had a number of telephone calls with their PSAO type, and he is well aware of my age.
I guess I'll just have to wait and see. Only four weeks to go, I'm just getting impatient
Clearly they are going to try and make an exception for you.
Here's hoping, and thanks, I'll post the outcome.
Difficulty will be attaining future rank.
My understanding is that if you are Group B, then unless you have done officer career courses, JOTES etc you will revert to Lt on Group A.
I was aware recently of an ACF chap going through Specialist TA selection - not impossible but future may be limited.
Or he will have to sort MK1 and get himself off to JOTAC...
I'm keen to get back in though, so that is my priority. Any subsequent promotion would be a bonus, although, I expect, unlikely.
What 'rank' are you at the moment?
As a Gp B you are in a permanent state of 2Lt probation, thus not allowing official promotion to Lt.
If and when you do become Gp A promotion is possible, although normally you will only be considered if you have completed your relevant special to arms/JOTAC courses etc.
According to TA regs, Gp B time DOES count towards your 1 or 2 years probation time although many will claim it doesn't and insist you do it again.
Notwithstanding this, your CO will have the final say anyway.
Flt Lt (Acting, Paid) at present. Substantive rank Fg Off, i.e acting Cpt, substantive Lt. It's a tri-service unit, which is why I wondered about conversion.
I'll be quite happy to sort MK1 and JOTAC if required.
They may, of course, decide that my "specialist" skills are not worth it anyway.
As I said, I'll let you know.
