A Nigerian woman has been fined £400 for carrying snails into Britain's biggest airport in her luggage.

Surat Oluyemisi Anibaba had walked into the red channel at Heathrow from the baggage reclaim area saying that she had some items to declare.

When Customs officers searched her baggage they found several plastic bags full of approximately 230lbs of the dead gastropods.

Customs and Excise spokesman Bob Gaiger said: "It was the largest seizure of snails ever at the airport.

"We regularly make seizures of meat and dairy products at Heathrow, but snails are a little more unusual - certainly in that quantity."

Ms Anibaba pleaded guilty at Uxbridge Magistrates' Court in west London for importing a prohibited foodstuff.

She was fined £400 and ordered to pay £65 costs.

John Whyte, head of Customs operations at Heathrow, said: "Customs are determined to crack down on those who attempt to smuggle illegal foodstuffs."

The snails are a delicacy and more and more are being exported from Nigeria to Europe for its delicatessen trade.

The haul is to be examined by a specialist customs team to establish whether they belong to an endangered species.
