Suspect in Pearl killing arrested

A key suspect wanted over the abduction and murder of US journalist Daniel Pearl has been arrested, police in Pakistan have said.

Mohammad Hashim, alias Arif, was arrested a few days ago in the central Punjab town of Gujranwala, they said.

Mr Hashim is alleged to have arranged the meeting between the Wall Street Journal reporter and his kidnappers.

Daniel Pearl was abducted and murdered in Karachi in January 2002 while researching Islamic militancy.

Pakistani authorities had put up a one million rupee ($16,700) reward for information leading to the arrest of Mr Hashim.

"He has gone through court procedures and right now he is in jail," Gujranwala police chief, Zafar Abbas, told the Reuters news agency.

A local court has allowed police to keep him in custody for two more days.
