Surveyor in the Army?

Hi all,

I’m a total newbie here, I’m a building surveyor and I’m looking to use my knowledge and experience in the armed forces to better myself. What roles would best suit me and where are the regiments located ? The best match that I’ve seen is either a drafty or CMT but are there’s any others ? I’m based near Cardiff.

You don’t have to use your current skills in the reserve to better yourself. Enjoy learning new ones.

2 troop Royal Mons Royal Engineers are based in Llandaff I believe.

I was in an STRE. I'm a building surveyor and had great fun. Used my skills in many ways and learned a lot about other things. Give it a try...

There are two separate surveyor trades in the Sappers: The one closest to "Building Surveyor" is a Regular only trade stream, and so there are no "surveyor" specific roles in Reserve units. You general site experience however will be really useful. In addition, much of the time in RE Reserve units you will be training and exercising as a Combat Engineer.

Depending on your skill level and qualifications, the other survey trade, which does have a Reserve element, is Geographic Technician. This is more the high end of geo data analysis, specialist map making etc. See here:

Avoid Geo Tech Reserves, mostly printing maps unless you get on a FTRS course at Wyton.
Plenty of chances to go abroad though on sunshine tours.

Did much change when the Squadron was taken fully into 42 Geo? Thought that the idea was that Geo Vocational Specialists could be used more easily. Aren't a lot of the Squadron already working with OS and similar companies?

Being part of 42Geo offers more scope for training with the regulars.
But the reserve Geo Course was only 2 weeks compared with the longer timeframe for 42.
Driver training was offered to nearly all soldiers what ever trade.
