1. You could be posted to any unit, all have weapons so all need armourers. However, expect to spend more time at standard Infantry, Tankie, Truckie or loggie units, not Paras, SAS etc.

2. You will spend most of your work time inspecting and repairing weapons, test firing is pretty rare, you'll spend more time on the range waiting to fix weapons than you will firing them.

3. Pay is the same as anyone else as a Craftsman (Lower Pay level) As a LCPL to SGT you'll be on Higher Pay level and if you don't go Artificer, you go back to lower band as a SSGT.

you could be sent worldwide, the same as the rest of the Army.

The worst part of the job is having a spineless boss sometimes.

In my time as an armourer I have been on Ops in South Armagh, Belfast, Kosovo, Cyprus, Bosnia, Kuwait and Iraq. I have also spent a lot of time in Canada and Germany as well as trips to Kenya, all over the UK and most of Europe. I still have nearly 7 years to go so plenty of time to see more of the world.

NI, Bosnia And Kosovo are pretty much out for you as far as Op tours go but you have Afghan as an op tour that you will have a strong chance of getting. The Falklands Belize, Brunei are some other places you could potentially go and who knows who we and the Americans will mug next!!

Every unit and sub unit needs an Armourer. You will have a degree of independence from early on after training and unlike some other verminous trades not many non secialists look after the reapir of their own weapons.
The opportunity for promotion should normally be quicker as will the opportunity to advance to the heady Artificer path.
Good luck in what you decide to do.

So long as you get the required score(s) in your test, tell them that this is the trade you want.....don't let them fob you off to the infantry or worse still, the wedges
