Bit late now but 2 Rifles had a specific need for Assault Pioneers, and some of our mobilised blokes did the course as part of their PDT ( AIUI. )
I think that was for 3 Rifles on H11 mate. I don't think they ended up being employed in that role in the end anyway. Was very surprised when I first heard about it as 2 Rifles had effectively mothballed AP Pln though there was talk post-tour of resurrecting it.

BB it was a pre requisite of going on tour with 3 rifles but no one told 3 rifles. They did not have an A/P platoon in their orbat. There may have been a couple of blokes on the last tour doing AP type stuff but they were in the minority

Spad, I knew you were keen to do another tour, I didn't realise how keen.

I suspect that many other RE TA units will be in the same boat as our unit. There isn't as much of a shortage of regular sappers, hence most of the tour oppurtunities being with specialised positions in the more senior ranks.

Have you tried talking to PSI's at other Londist RE TA units? They may have a better idea of Class 3 courses and the chances of getting a tour with it. They may also know of other opportunites of doing a tour etc.

Not trying to get rid of you, but have you considered transfering for a year or 2 to another RE TA unit that mobilises more blokes?

Furthermore, if you are that desperate to get shot at, I understand the RLC TA are sending lots of blokes out there if you fancy driving a bullet catcher. You'll probably need a C+E licence though.

its not the bullets i would worry about its thoes pesky IED's
But moving units is something I have chatted about to the COC and they assured me i have as much chance getting on tour staying put then i do moving, due to being the new guy and people having to get to know me before they send me,

as for jumping ship to RLC i did speak to 210 PSI the other night and that is a good possibility,

I've already got my C just need the + E which I'm hoping to do in the new year, but every time i mention it budgets get chucked in my face, and when i remind them it could be my camp they pick the budgets up and chuck it again,

I think I can see where the problem lies: You are new in your unit, barely qualified and now want to leave. With that sort of commitment I would not put you forward for pan bash.

Spad is relatively new, only having been in several years. Which in our unit is new - on our annual camp recently the average age was 44.

However, he has already done one tour so is hardly a sprog. He has also done plenty of specialist trade courses, but the class 3 has been difficult to get on for him and many others.

I would decribe him as keen as mustard and gagging to get out on tour again. He, like most of our unit, is unlikely to get mobilised until he is a senior. I certainly don't regard it as "lack of commitment" that he is looking at transfering to another unit.

Best you give him a hug at the Christmas party then :)
