Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Folks - here's one for real anoraks.

Based purely on the passage of time since inception, list the 10 Oldest British Regiments, from oldest to (relative term) youngest. This is not a question about seniority...

Or if you like, just list some and bold Regiments and where you think they place in the Top Ten.

    Good luck! :D

  8. King's Own Royal Border

  9. Are the Royal Scots the oldest Infantry Regiment? I only ask because I recall a Soldier magazine *cough* years ago stating it on its front cover?

Edited to add - or was it the Queens? head now proper muddled

  10. Nope, but there is a line Infantry Regiment in the list.

    Head w-a-a-a-a-y down south...

  11. As near as I can figure

    1. Royal Militia of the Island of Jersey 1337 (TA RE unit??)
    2. Honourable Artillery Company 1537
    3. Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers 1539
    4. Buffs 1572 (now Princess of Wales' Royal Regiment)
    5. Royal Scots 1633
    6. Coldstream Guards 1650
    7. Royal Horse Guards 1650 (now Blues and Royals or HCR to the pedantic)
    8. Grenedier Guards 1656
    9. Life Guards 1658
    10. Scots Guards 1661

  12. The Royal Scots are the oldest Regiment in the Regular Army...

Now then...I believe they amalgamated with someone...possibly someone w-a-a-a-a-a-y down south! :D

  13. Hampshires then the - M4 Bn - the RGBW

  14. Latest:

    • 1. Royal Militia of the Island of Jersey (1337)
      2. Honourable Artillery Company (1537)
      3. Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers (Militia) (1539)
      4. Buffs (now Princess of Wales' Royal Regiment) (1572)
      5. Royal Scots (1633) Yes - wrong place
      6. Coldstream Guards (1650) Yes - wrong place
      7. Royal Horse Guards (1650) (now Blues and Royals) Yes - wrong place
      8. Grenadier Guards (1656) Yes - wrong place
      9. Life Guards (1658) Yes - wrong place
      10. Scots Guards (1661) [No[/b]

To save much headscratching, there is a unit missing at No. 5 - lose the Scots Guards and everyone else shifts down into the right order...

I also have to say that I'm being slightly sneaky as the British Army wasn't even formed by Warrant until all these Regiments were already in existence.

  15. well is it, yes or no, its right doing me in :D
