Spine Race 2019

The weather forecast is not looking particularly hospitable with speculation about another Beast from the East hitting the country in the new year from the Met Office;

UK Outlook for Saturday 12 Jan 2019 to Saturday 26 Jan 2019:
The second week of January will probably be unsettled in most areas, giving heavy rain and gales at times, especially in the north, where severe gales are possible. Hill snow is likely, as well as snow to lower levels at times in the north. By mid-month there is a greater chance of colder weather, with an increasing likelihood of frost, fog and snow, and these conditions will probably continue for the rest of the period. Despite the potential change to colder weather during mid-January, some milder, wet and windy interludes also remain possible throughout this period.

It could well be snowing.......

As an armchair observer foul weather adds interest to the race, but I do hope that the conditions do not turn the event into one of survival.
Foul weather can ruin the race, well for me as I stand around on the moors;). I have one day to take off in that week undecided as to Monday or Friday at present.

Well I had a mery dash to my company's laptop repair department yesterday due to BSODding every 30 mins and stressed the importance of it being fixed by the start of this race !

Good evening all. Just checking in and putting the thread on my watch list. I’m not on the volunteer crew this year so will be watching from afar.

@High on the hill, best of luck with Challenger. Looking forward to watching you tab it all the way into Hawes this year. Are you raising cash for a good cause with your efforts? Happy to publicise your efforts if you are, and contribute some myself.

Apparently caused by an event called Sudden Stratospheric Warming which pushes cold arctic air south.

The pattern indicates strong ridge with high pressure system over the Arctic region, while another strong ridge will be placed over the central Atlantic – the Azores high. Upper troughs with low pressure systems will be located across the areas in between, over the northern Atlantic and most of Europe. The ‘opening channel’ between the low pressure to north and high pressure to the south, will support moisture advection and cyclones into the European continent, which should remain colder than average. This increases the potential for snowfall events with cyclones evolving over the continent. Indeed, details will be determined once we come closer to mid January, but current trends are suggesting we are in for some serious winter weather in the coming weeks!
*UPDATE* on the splitting Polar Vortex and winter trends across the European continent through mid January
HAVE FUN!

I probably require help from all you Facebook users as the organisers tend to update the roster on there but not on the web page. I noticed that there are fewer ladies entered certainly cant see Carol Morgan last years ladies winner. There are about half a dozen ladies that I can see. Also non of the French ladies perhaps a fall out from the snow goggles spat. Can any one post latest roster on here please.

Quick reference as to who is running in what race by competitor number -
100s and 200s are Spine Race
300s and 400s are Challenger
500s are MRT Challenge
Yes got that, there does appear to be a number of last years race runners have opted for the Challenger. Still very low numbers of ladies on the actual race. Good to see that Leslie Binns who DNF last year is back for another go.

I shall be sure to win this year as I’ve been training while in my bed. I just need volunteers to push or better carry my bed.

Thanks very much appreciated.

This year I have decided to try and raise some money with a split between Combat Stress and BELSMA.

My giving page

Its a big ask, I am felling ok now but have anguished over be 100% on the start day. A slight cold can scupper you race at the moment it's all systems go.

In for a penny in for a pound

My thoughts are on getting a bit further than Hawes my finish is Hadraw

My plans this week are a little bit of last minute shopping ( waterproof gloves) and a little bit of hill walking.
