South Georgia patrols

Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Do we still land patrols on South Georgia? I'd read these stopped a few years ago, which seems a bit back to the future.

  2. I think a ship pops down every now and then. I spent 4 months on the Island Jul to Oct 93. One of the best tours I ever did

    All socialists are ***** : )

  3. 6 months there in 97 and we only had a couple of snipers come down from the RIC to cull some reindeer.

Back in FI 2010 for 6 months and without going into to much detail, the RIC have a very busy period leading up to their FTX at the end of their tour, which is much reduced in timescales compared to a normal tour.

  4. South Georgia

I wouldn't be suprised if we have a Battalion down there shortly. Although I assume our usual, low key, yet successful approach would be more beneficial.

  5. IIRC they pulled out of Shackelton House a few years back and the remaining buildings that weren't asbestos infested and removed were handed over to BAS. The engineers had to clear the area of KEP of all ordnance beforehand. Not sure if the Postmaster remains to deal with passing tourist ships or if someone from BAS has taken over. Last time I touched land there was 2000.

  6. I was there in 07, only soldiers I saw there were the ones we took on a pleasure cruise to get them off the FI for a couple of weeks. Spent most the time snowboarding.

  7. The Island is regularly overflown, once or twice a week by air assets and the RN pootle about, landing shore parties when sea state and schedule allows.
