Soldiering on after 55 (non-commissioned)

  1. Are there currently any options?

    I'm not asking for myself (watch this space in about 18 months though), but it seems that the TA is stripping out the elder members of the fraternity. I've heard that the only likely justification for continuing service beyond 55 is to volunteer for ops - effectively back-to-back tours which, essentially, would put you into Regular service rather than TA.

    It was the case that as you neared the upper age limit, you'd dance with the devil and push yourself forward as a candidate for LE commission to stretch out an extra 5 years, but even this seems to be no longer a viable proposition.

    So, on behalf of those who have received a brown envelope, initially gasped with relief at finding that it wasn't a mobilisation notice, then found it was something more devastating, is there a nook or cranny that doesn't display ageism? ACC used to be more relaxed about age and if you can't burn an egg by the time you're 55...

One yearly extensions of service can be granted at the Commanding Officers discretion up to the age of 60 its in TA regs somewhere about how you go about it properly, but basically old duffer writes a letter saying "I got lots to offer can still do the job please dont chuck me out" the CO if they agree signs a form it gets sent up to glasgow they say yay or nay old duffer soldiers on or buggers off
  3. Ah, no, BA. That was up until last year. The CO now has to justify (very strongly) why an extension should be given. As I posted earlier, this justification seems to be along the lines of "He has opted for Voluntary Mobilisation". An argument for retaining a WO1 because his next in line is currently only a SSgt doesn't seem to cut the mustard. Expect a shortage of senior SNCOs for the next 5 years or so - and even these will be leaving their units derelict as they progress through courses that enable them to obtain the rank - leaving their units vulnerable.

    I foresaw this more than 10 years ago, but the topic was turned to the shortage of YOs. With sufficient encouragement, I could see half my unit capable of moving to YO within 4 years, but achievement of senior SNCO rank takes considerably longer. Suddenly chopping because of age removes any buffer that we had. Will the establishment now have to change? Senior SNCO becoming a SSgt rather than WO1? Will this be reflected in the officers - Capt instead of Major? Will the unit downsize accordingly, 10 blokes instead of 20? Will the output become less viable due to shortage of numbers?

    I'm concerned because this is MY TA - 35 years and counting. MY unit will be affected - 29 years and counting. When I get the chop, I want the TA and my unit to be fully functioning - and that won't happen if there's no leadership. At least if there's some backwoods area where the current leadership can be retained, they can be called back if necessary. The TA doesn't have a Reserve liability unfortunately.
  4. Looks like there will be some disapointed old duffers in my unit as i saw a couple of the letters i mentioned sitting in my units admin office this week
  5. It means that some won't be able to attend Camp this year. Some that have been told that this year's Camp will be their last have indicated that they may just pack in now. It won't be a big issue in units where promotion is dependent on the departure of the man at the top (infantry etc. - yay, drinks in the mess!), but in Specialist units that are necessarily top-heavy, it means that programmed works won't get done and the future scope of works will have to be cut back.

    Don't forget, the One Army comprises three Armies. The Specialist TA is most closely integrated with their Regular counterparts but there's a massive age difference - and it's more complementary than substitution, often filling roles that the Regulars don't have. The Independant TA has a lesser age difference but appears more difficult to integrate due to the longer training requirement. The Independant TA currently has little output other than to provide IRs while the Specialist TA provides output whether mobilised or not. Put together sensibly, the Army has a massive capability - but it relies on each entity being allowed its own foibles. One set of rules across the board may be easier for the generators of Terms and Conditions of Service, but doesn't enhance the potential of the Army overall. In some units, age 30 is where performance starts going downhill. In others, age 40 is considered the minimum for wealth of experience.
  6. This sort of thing happened with the Tories last time and it's no different now. The Tories are at least predictable.
  7. I've got to disagree on that. At one time the upper age limit was 40. It has gradually increased to the current 55 - the main reason why there's a small cohort who don't have Mess kit; over the last 20 years, you couldn't be sure if you'd have more than 3 years in the Mess. Of course, that cohort will be much smaller next year. Probably just me. :sad:

  9. That could be a good idea, a resurrection of the HSF for time-expired TA, but with an overseas commitment - I haven't militarily worked in the UK for nearly 20 years. Lose the weekends, MATTs and reduce the Bounty in place of an Annual Camp but retain the liability for call-up as an enhancement or emergency replacement
  10. We are about to make 7500 people redundant..........................could get a bit tricky if we employ TA to carry out the work instead?? Bottom line is - we're broke, the gravy train is dry and everyone is tightening their belt.

    Deactivated in 1992. It was designed to counter a specific Cold War threat which ceased to exist.

    The overseas commitment would contradict the raison d'être (and the very title) of a Home Service Force.
  12. Not quite broke. Plenty of money to throw away on Overseas aid to space exploring, nuclear power, aircraft carrier launching "Third world" countries and EU Countries that couldn't be bothered to themselves properly
  13. There's still people out there able to be re-engaged over 55 and not for ops.

    UOTCs can often make very good use of people that are no longer suitable for their old Corps' etc, I know of a 63 year old still going strong. A 57 year old was re-engaged for a year just last week, although I imagine it's his last one.

    It might not appeal to everyone, but someone with still a lot to give should at least enquire if they have a local UOTC if they're looking like getting booted out by their current unit.

  15. He's not quite that old! (nearly) But he would be a good example of someone with plenty to give despite his age, he's got another few months before he's up again
