    A British soldier has been killed in an explosion in southern Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence has said.The serviceman was from 1st Battalion The Mercian Regiment, serving with 40 Commando Royal Marines Battle Group.His family has been told of his death - which was the first British fatality in the country for almost a month.The soldier died near PB Waterloo military base in Sangin, Helmand Province.He was providing protection to his comrades who had returned from a patrol when the blast happened.The fatality took the number of British service personnel who have lost their lives since the start of operations in Afghanistan in 2001 to 282.
