A British soldier serving with a bomb disposal team has died after an explosion in southern Afghanistan.

The soldier was part of 11 EOD Regiment, Royal Logistic Corps, part of the Counter-IED Task Force, the Ministry of Defence said.

He was killed in the Musa Qala area, in northern Helmand Province, on Monday morning. His family has been informed.

The death brings to 247 the number of UK service personnel killed since the start of operations in 2001.

Lieutenant Colonel David Wakefield, spokesman for Task Force Helmand, said: "His resolution and his gallantry in the fight to protect the lives of others from Improvised Explosive Devices in Helmand will not be forgotten."
