Just wondering if there are any rules about smoking during Basic Training? Is it allowed on breaks during the day or just in the evenings or what? Do they try and get you to stop?
"Fag for the corporal.............light for the corporal".
Some places it may not have changed...........who's to say. I remember my Skill at Arms Cpl from basic, big Geordie with a Jimmy Edwards mustache, killer sense of humour. Between every lesson he'd designate a ciggy break, hold up two fingers and say the words, "fag for the corporal".
Drinking? You are normally too knackered to want the extra touch of a hangover in the mornings, and try doing a 5 miler after a skin full the night before......I have seen vomitting and one bloke even shat himself.

They'll knack you, cost a fortune & in the end kill you & for nowt (yep; I smoked 50 a day until 10 years ago & a mate my age has just been diagnosed with stage 3 lung cancer...).

I think that about 75% of the platoon smoked in training. The smoke break was always called by a full screw that smoked like a chimney with finger tips that looked as though they had been dipped in henna, and a wracking cough that sounded like a Chieftain tank winding up on a sub zero 3am active edge.
We never got to the NAAFI, the closest we got to a beer was on Saturday night after doing laundry in Aldershot or Frimley

Can't answer for ITC Catterick, however, unless it has changed, during 14 weeks at Pirbright, there were smoking shelters outside the blocks. Also no alcohol drinking fot recruits allowed on camp there either
