SLR Serial numbers

Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. I have been offered a nice(deactivated) SLR with wooden furniture, the serial number is prefixed SA,I cannot find any reference to this prefix and I was hoping someone here might know more.

  2. UE, UF, UB and US were the prefixs on British rifles for Enfield, Fazakerley, BSA and Sterling.

SAF- is a Lithgow prefix, and quite a few Australian L1A1s did apparently get mixed in with British rifle stocks due to the pooled weapons stores in SE Asia.

SA, SN and SR were prefixes used on British rifles that were repaired, but where the original number was illegible or erased. These were prefixes for the Army, Navy and RAF respectively.

SA- and SI- may also be prefixes on Indian-made L1A1s.
