Thomas 'Slab' Murphy has been arrested on money-laundering and tax offences.

William Hill the bookmakers say the chances of him doing a Capone & snuffing it in the chokey are 10,000:1 on.

Detectives from the Republic's Criminal Assets Bureau have arrested the alleged former IRA chief of staff Thomas "Slab" Murphy at his County Louth home.

He was due to appear in court on Thursday, but he complained of chest pains and was taken to hospital.

Mr Murphy is due to face nine charges of failing to file tax returns under the Taxes Consolidation Act.

The bureau has been investigating his financial affairs for three years and has twice searched his home.

He lives close to the border at Ballybinaby, Hackballscross, in County Louth.

The Republic's Criminal Assets Bureau was set up in 1996, and was the model for the UK's Assets Recovery Agency.
