i believe that picture is the SA80 Carbine, which is used in small numbers, normally by Armoured vehicle crew members
No. It's a l85A2 with a quadrail handguard and a gangster grip with a bipod. It's been around since 2008 now.

If this a wah... :x

other than the fact that's a L22 not an L85 , which BTW still provides a 17.4 " barrel length
It's not the carbine. The quadrail is fitted to bog standard L85A2's.
Agreed its not the carbine but an IW/ L85A2. BTW the L85A2 barrel length is 495mm against 285mm of the L22A2, I'm sad enough to have the publications on my laptop. Wouldn't be much of a carbine with the same size barrel would it? Dog handlers are carrying these in Afghan.

After being tried in low-intensity Iraq & Afghanistan, the A2 is now said to be as good as any bullpup in the world http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SA80

But in a WW2-type high intensity fight where thousands of rounds would go up the spout per week, does its metallurgy look like its up to the job?

Yes. You can tell by the way that much of the service the rifle has seen was high-intensity warfare. Just because it's a guerrilla war doesn't mean you aren't facing near-constant attacks.
