I don't honestly know where Larson had his head, but most of his "cow" series are so far off the wall they may as well be coat-hooks. Most of his work is witty, pithy and occasionally hilarious, unfortunately, with one exception *, the cows just don't work for me.

I'm a lover of great cartoons; I have collections of some of the greatest. So far in this thread, apart from Larson's genius, I've only seen a great deal of turgid low/middling American crap. I can't, without slicing up books and scanning, put up any of Thurber's, Handelsmann's or the Punch/Private Eye Collective output, let alone Giles.
